NWS reporting 3 fatalities just north of me in the Town of Smithfield.

conflicting reports on the local news channels.

reports of homes leveled, people trapped, and some killed.

all eyes were on the rotating cell moving from skaneateles up thru marcellus,

and into syracuse city proper, then towards rome ny,  nobody had

mentioned the dangers of the cell coming in south of the above mentioned

cell, which moved in from southern onondaga/cortland counties into

central madison.

it just seems that with the technology today not only should we watch these

"rotating" cells, but also other cells that can develop into deadly storms,

if this was a few miles south it could have been me. I was watching the

updates with the non stop coverage about the "tornado warning" with the cell

moving from syracuse towards rome, but never expected the 2nd wave of

this system to have this type of impact locally, it didn't appear that intense

compared to the above mentioned cell.

many thoughts with the families affected. if you were watching all of the local news

channels there was no warning for this area to seek shelter or prepare for

this type of storm, other than the NWS warnings throughout the day stating

that the potential was there for severe conditions.

Sad to hear about the fatalities (latest report up to 4). Looks like if there was a tornado, it may have been associated with a comma head. Was a tornado warning issued for the area?

Yes a tornado warning was issued and no it was a discrete, relatively long-lived supercell ahead of the line.

Assuming it is a tornado, that has to be one of the deadlier on record in the state of NY.

Wow...I can't believe this. Does anyone have any radar imagery or dual pol of this storm? Cannot believe 4 people died from this. =(

No it was not, this was from the QLCS behind that lead supercell:

as i looked back thru the flurry of warnings, there was a warning issued 6:46 pm for a severe

thunderstorm heading from deruyter NE thru Mad county.

unfortunately with all of the tv coverage of the headliner, this warning was a bit overshadowed

now they have confirmed 4 dead,  4 homes destroyed, and possibly another 2 story

home moved off of it's foundation.  press conference coming this morning some time.

If anything was on the ground in the Vernon sherrill area when it passed just to the north there has to be more photos. That area provides good views. I was on the phone with my cousin at a festival up that way when it was passing from the west to the north and she was describing to

Me what sounded like extremely strong inflow winds. At that point the storm was straddling the thruway. Someone near turning stone must have some either photos or videos.

I remember when it first came out for this area (Owasco - Auburn - Skan the entire statement also mentioned being in Madison county by a certain time. It skirted south of us so we didn't get a good view here. There's aerials up here of the damage:
