They also increased the slight risk area to include me lol gotta say I was surprised maybe the front is going to wash out more than they thought..  the DP here is only 55

.

Our dew point is at 66 here just to the southeast of New Bern but the humidity is only at 52%. We do need the rain but hopefully no hail.

STW fail?????

MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 0669
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
   0127 PM CDT FRI MAY 23 2014

   AREAS AFFECTED...CAROLINAS

   CONCERNING...SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 178...

   VALID 231827Z - 232000Z

THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 178
   CONTINUES.

SUMMARY...STORM INITIATION HAS FAILED THUS FAR WITHIN WW 178...BUT
IS STILL ANTICIPATED TO OCCUR ON AN ISOLATED BASIS BY 21Z. ISOLATED
STORMS FORMING OVER THE HIGHER TERRAIN OF THE SRN APPALACHIANS WILL
POSE A RISK FOR SEVERE HAIL AND LOCALLY DAMAGING WINDS AS WELL. AN
ADDITIONAL WW WILL BE COORDINATED SHORTLY.

DISCUSSION...LIMITED LOW-LEVEL CONVERGENCE AND RELATIVELY DRY
BOUNDARY LAYER PROFILES HAVE LIKELY INHIBITED STORM DEVELOPMENT THUS
FAR ACROSS MUCH OF THE CAROLINAS. THE EXCEPTION HAS BEEN OVER THE
HIGHER TERRAIN WHERE ISOLATED TSTMS HAVE RECENTLY FORMED FROM MACON
COUNTY NC TO PICKENS COUNTY SC. WITH A THERMODYNAMIC/KINEMATIC SETUP
SIMILAR TO WW 178...AN UPSTREAM SEVERE TSTM WATCH ISSUANCE IS
   ANTICIPATED SOON.

WITH CONTINUED ROBUST SURFACE HEATING...IT STILL REMAINS PROBABLE
THAT ISOLATED STORM DEVELOPMENT WILL EVENTUALLY OCCUR FARTHER E/SE
ACROSS THE PIEDMONT AND COASTAL PLAIN.

Newest run of SPC SSEO is pretty interetsing for southeast NC to say the least...could get interesting into the evening hours near Wilmington...the two parameters I've included in this image is significant for rotating storms (updraft helicity) and hail (updraft speed) these are pretty high and this product has been nailing the severe threats recently elsewhere in the US (for example VA tor warnings yesterday that the SPC missed.)

btw these are 3hour probabilities valid 0z

Could see a tor warning near Conway, SC as the storm intersects that boundary. Has slight rotation on it now.

There was a decent spinup as it crossed the sea breeze those are actually pretty common and there is a mini tornado alley along Hwy17 in far eastern NC mostly southern/eastern Pitt Co, Craven CO, Beaufort Co and Lenoir and Jones Co often see weak EF0-1 tornados from sea breeze interaction with pulse type summer thunderstorms.

Storm heading for Myrtle Beach with new rotation on latest scan. Bet there is a nice wall cloud. That area could be headed for some flash flooding if those storms keep training.

Eta: Hail stone from Myrtle Beach.. Lots of out of towners caught off guard I bet. Rotation now on the following cell too.

Amazing shots from above the severe storms in SC yesterday that rocked my socks:

52007_627625107315658_569864408400315835

From NWS:

Here are some amazing photos taken above Friday's severe thunderstorms over South Carolina. These storms produced golf ball to baseball size hail and wind gusts of 50-65 mph. The pictures were taken aboard the NASA ER-2 research aircraft by pilot Stu Broce. The ER-2 cruises at 65-70,000 feet and on this mission, it overflew these 50-55,000 foot tall severe storms. The ER2 was collecting data as part of IPHEx - the Integrated Precipitation and Hydrology Experiment that is taking place across North and South Carolina from May 1st to June 15th. More information about IPHEx can be found at:http://pmm.nasa.gov/IPHEx

GSP continues to be about the only one in the SE who regularly warns these pop up-pulsing spring/summer t-showers.

Maybe they are or aren't severe but they don't hesitate.

Funny you mention that...we had a storm in McDowell that really pulsed up about 3:15 pm and it dropped continuous dime sized hail for about 20 minutes...storm was never warned and once it began to drop southeast, it collapsed!

We don't have too may members that live in these parts but nonetheless still something to watch since we cover MS.  Currently there is a tornado warning for St. Helena and Tangipahoa Parrish's.  There is a small couplet on radar as of now but it has been more defined.  This should be heading up into MS within the next hour or 2.  Amite City, LA and Roseland, LA look to be next in line with it reaching those areas within the next 15 minutes.

Is this a severe weather thread for SE or everywhere? I am confused? Looks like nothing around here severe weather wise, for the next ten days. Starting to look like the other board over here! :)

Severe weather season in the SE is OVER. Or at least tornado season is. It's extremely rare to have tornadoes in the summer months in the south, unless it's the product of a tropical system.
