MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 1314
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1029 AM CDT TUE JUL 08 2014

AREAS AFFECTED...OH...PA...NY

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH LIKELY

VALID 081529Z - 081700Z

PROBABILITY OF WATCH ISSUANCE...80 PERCENT

SUMMARY...A SUBSTANTIAL WIND DAMAGE THREAT IS EXPECTED TO DEVELOP
THIS MORNING AS A SQUALL LINE ORGANIZES ACROSS OH AND MOVES INTO WRN
PA AND WRN NY. A QLCS TORNADO THREAT MAY ALSO DEVELOP ALONG THE
LEADING EDGE OF THE LINE. WW ISSUANCE WILL LIKELY BE NECESSARY AS
THE SEVERE THREAT INCREASES THIS MORNING.

DISCUSSION...THE LATEST SFC ANALYSIS SHOWS A COLD FRONT FROM LOWER
MI EXTENDING SSWWD INTO INDIANA. SFC DEWPOINTS AHEAD OF THE FRONT
ARE IN THE UPPER 60S F ACROSS MUCH OF THE OH VALLEY EXTENDING INTO
THE ERN GREAT LAKES REGION. MODERATE INSTABILITY SHOULD CONTINUE TO
DEVELOP AS SFC TEMPS WARM OVER THE NEXT FEW HOURS. THIS ALONG WITH A
BAND OF STRONG LARGE-SCALE ASCENT EVIDENT ON WATER VAPOR IMAGERY
OVER THE OH VALLEY WILL SUPPORT THE DEVELOPMENT OF A FAST-MOVING
SQUALL-LINE LATE THIS MORNING. SHORT-TERM MODEL FORECASTS SUGGEST
THAT A LINE SEGMENT IN WRN OH COULD BE THE BEGINNING OF A LINEAR MCS
THAT IS FORECAST TO MOVE ENEWD ACROSS NCNTRL OH...WRN PA INTO WRN NY
THROUGH EARLY AFTERNOON. THE WSR-88D VWP AT CLEVELAND OH AND
PITTSBURGH PA SHOW STRONG SPEED SHEAR IN THE BOUNDARY LAYER WITH 0-6
KM SHEAR AROUND 60 KT AND UNIDIRECTIONAL WIND PROFILES. THIS SHOULD
BE FAVORABLE FOR DAMAGING WIND GUSTS AS THE LINE SEGMENT OVER WRN OH
GRADUALLY GROWS UPSCALE. IN ADDITION TO THE SUBSTANTIAL WIND-DAMAGE
THREAT...ROTATING CELL ELEMENTS EMBEDDED IN THE MCS MAY BE
ASSOCIATED WITH A THREAT FOR A TORNADO OR TWO.

So apparently the typhoon in the pacific is going to cause a trough similar to what we saw in Jan. Of course right when I go on vacation it will cool down somewhat. By the way, this is our year. We will see a snow event 12+. I can feel it in the air.

Yeah, sounds good to me.

Hopefully winter 2014-2015, brings more 6" + events, and less frigid dry air. ( lower gas bills)

NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1137 AM CDT SUN JUL 13 2014

AREAS AFFECTED...OH...WRN PA...WRN NY

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH LIKELY

VALID 131637Z - 131730Z

PROBABILITY OF WATCH ISSUANCE...80 PERCENT

SUMMARY...SCT-NUMEROUS THUNDERSTORMS ARE EXPECTED TO DEVELOP ALONG
COLD FRONT ACROSS THE OH VALLEY INTO THE LOWER GREAT LAKES REGION
THIS AFTERNOON. LOCALLY DAMAGING WINDS ARE THE PRIMARY RISK.

DISCUSSION...LATEST MODEL GUIDANCE AND SATELLITE IMAGERY SUGGEST A
SHORT-WAVE TROUGH HAS PROGRESSED INTO THE BASE OF LARGER TROUGH
ALONG THE MN/WI BORDER. ASSOCIATED MID-LEVEL SPEED MAX SHOULD EJECT
ACROSS WI/MI INTO SRN ONTARIO/SWRN QB BY 14/00Z FORCING BELT OF
STRONGER FLOW ALOFT ACROSS PRE-FRONTAL CONFLUENCE ZONE OVER THE OH
VALLEY/LOWER GREAT LAKES REGION. 12Z SOUNDINGS ACROSS THIS REGION
ARE NOT PARTICULARLY CAPPED AND CONVECTIVE TEMPERATURES SHOULD BE NO
MORE THAN THE LOW-MID 80S. CU FIELD IS EXPANDING/DEEPENING AHEAD OF
FRONTAL ZONE ACROSS OH/INDIANA AND THUNDERSTORMS ARE NOW MATURING
NEAR CMH IN CNTRL OH. A GRADUAL UPWARD EVOLUTION IN CONVECTION IS
EXPECTED WITHIN THE MORE CONFLUENT BOUNDARY LAYER FLOW THROUGH THE
AFTERNOON HOURS. DEEP WLY FLOW APPEARS SUPPORTIVE OF ORGANIZED
MULTI-CELL UPDRAFTS AND DAMAGING WINDS.

Looks like a pretty active day again today. Best potential looks to be South and West.

If you like storms, it's been a decent summer so far.

I have used my pool like twice so far. It's either rainy or too cool to swim.

MESOSCALE PRECIPITATION DISCUSSION 0220
NWS WEATHER PREDICTION CENTER COLLEGE PARK MD
303 PM EDT SUN JUL 27 2014

AREAS AFFECTED...EASTERN OH/WESTERN PA/NORTHERN WV/MD PANHANDLE...

CONCERNING...HEAVY RAINFALL...FLASH FLOODING POSSIBLE

VALID 271902Z - 272302Z

SUMMARY...EARLY AFTERNOON HEATING HAS HELPED DEVELOP WIDESPREAD
SURFACE-BASED CONVECTION ACROSS THE OH VALLEY. WHILE FLASH
FLOODING IS NOT IMMINENT...GRADUAL ORGANIZATION IS EXPECTED AS
LOW-LEVEL WINDS BEGIN TO STRENGTHEN BY THE EARLY EVENING.

DISCUSSION...A DYNAMIC MID-LEVEL PATTERN IS IN PLACE ACROSS THE
REGION WITH AN 18Z RAOB FROM ILN SHOWING 50 TO 60 KNOTS OF FLOW
AROUND 500-MB. MID/UPPER LEVEL DRYING WAS NOTED IN THE WATER VAPOR
IMAGERY AS WELL AS WITH SPECIAL 18Z SOUNDINGS ACROSS THE OH
VALLEY/CENTRAL APPALACHIANS. HOWEVER...PLENTY OF MOISTURE IS IN
PLACE BELOW THIS SUB-SATURATED LAYER WITH PWATS REACHING THE 1.50
INCH MARK. ADDITIONALLY...THE GUIDANCE SHOWS LOW-LEVEL WARM
ADVECTION TRANSPORTING HIGHER MOISTURE FROM THE TN VALLEY INTO THE
OH VALLEY.

THE CURRENT RADAR IMAGERY SHOWED WIDESPREAD CONVECTION ACROSS THE
NORTHERN HALF OF OH WITH CELL MOTIONS GENERALLY AT 20 TO 30 KNOTS
TOWARD THE EAST. THE ENTIRE REGION IS UNCAPPED WITH 2000-3000 J/KG
OF SBCAPE PER AN 18Z OBJECTIVE ANALYSIS. SO THERE IS LITTLE REASON
TO BELIEVE THE CONVECTION WILL WANE DURING THE NEXT SEVERAL HOURS
WITH VERY HEAVY DOWNPOURS EXPECTED WITHIN THE STORMS SUSTAINING
STRONGER UPDRAFTS. THE KILN RADAR SUGGESTS RAINFALL RATES MAY BE
IN THE 1 TO 2 INCH/HOUR RANGE WHICH SEEMS REASONABLE GIVEN THE
THERMODYNAMIC ENVIRONMENT THE STORMS RESIDE IN. THE FFG VALUES ARE
QUITE LOW STRETCHING ALONG THE CENTRAL APPALACHIANS AND BACK INTO
EASTERN OH. SUCH THRESHOLDS COULD BE EXCEEDED THROUGH 23Z.
UNFORTUNATELY THE CURRENT HIGH-RES MODELS HAVE DONE A POOR JOB
HANDLING THE ONGOING CONVECTION. HOWEVER...THE SIGNAL OF A HEAVY
RAINFALL EVENT IS INDICATED ACROSS THE BOARD WHICH RAISED
FORECASTER CONFIDENCE.
