March Banter Thread

North Balti Zen

Recommended Posts

Someone needs to PM me on the group dynamics of this forum. I still appear to be uneducated.

Excited/worried/IMBY posts are prob best for banter thread.

Unless you can read an H5 map, etc., best to let those who know what they are looking at run the discussion in the storm threat threads. During off-hours between runs, a little more freedom there, but not as much as some of the newer members are taking.

Each of the long-time posters has a distinct personality, but poking/trolling that person from a newcomer is generally bad form. Ian sometimes tries to balance the irrational exuberance in threads, particuarly from so many days out, by quite rightly noting that it is hard to get sizeable snows into DC in the best of times, much less mid-March. Matt is correct that boundary layers/too warm will be a huge issue for a lot of us in the respective beltways even if the model'd snow looks tasty.

Generally, read more, learn, ask questions where necessary, and weenie out in here if you must would be a good rule of thumb.

Personally, I am rooting like hell for some anomolous March snow event. Just because. But I won't argue with runs showing otherwise or narration of same etc. in the storm threads. Especially now that tracker has correctly put the warning out.

i thought in March...you searched for a HECS or spring and nothing in the middle

maybe.. but if you've been following weather for longer than this season the blind faith is stupid. if i wanted to just focus on the best snow maps etc I'd hang out at some teenagers FB page. this site has always been good because people analyze things and use their knowledge to add to the conversation.  the overfocus on the biggest solutions gets old pretty quick..

If this wasn't mid March would you agree that this would be an interesting system? Seems like all models say snow and the only thing arguing against accumulations is climo...is it possible to maybe rely on climo too much sometimes? Who knows...snowtv will be pretty if I choose to stay awake

It's interesting sure. The two wave scenario is tricky tho. I guess we're close enough now that it seems something will happen.. but who knows.  You obviously have more reason to be interested given where you are.  If it's just 1-2" of slop it doesn't do a lot for me other than novelty. Plus I get aggravated with people weeniecasting from day 10 then thinking they did something good if it happens.  If it's going to happen I won't root against it though.

I shouldn't be rude or be up after midnight looking at the GFS. Or dealing with snow weenies in mid-March. It's just a culmination of a lot of shouldn'ts. I don't forget when people are consistently snide though.. and there is a consistent dismissal of any sort of logical non super snowy commentary, plus the fact that people close to DC act like DC never gets snow or something. We had a pretty damn good winter in the city even if we got no more snow and got 30-40" less than someone in northern MD.

This is a good example of stuff that should be posted here and not the main disco thread.  Randy asked for a tighter thread so i wish people would take that suggestion to heart

Oh no! I might have to dig out my flamethrower to defend DCA!

But right now, there could be anything from a foot in Cumberland to no snow sticking at DCA.

Totally different than most snow threats.

get your logic out of here

i think there's a valid argument that this one is worse than the rest of this winter -- highzenburg ran around unchecked in that thread for days, so naturally the only options on the table were a great HECS or the greatest HECS

thank you -- though wxusaf has a point, most threats are pretty terrible early on when the weenies are out of control. hopefully the crack down will begin soon, especially if the models continue to show snow today. otherwise, the thread will become even more unreadable.

exactly -- i just think this one was slightly worse because it's hard to get excited this time of year at long lead times if you're firmly rooted in reality -- so there definitely was one-sided weenie fest for a bit

Highzenburg is fine. He knows what to look for and knows what he's talking about. Yeah, maybe a bit over-optimistic, but who cares.

I think what's worse is the people who are reminding us about the calendar every hour. We get it, it's March. No one thinks it's January (and before Ian get's angry, you're not included in this group ;) ).

From a moderating standpoint (and from my own POV), there's a difference between banter/IMBY questions/analysis of the CRAS and what Highzenburg and some others are doing.
