Ian
Disagree on the climo stuff. Not sure people are considering the full extent of climo. Forecasting a near record event is probably always difficult without near unanimous agreement. Obviously some of us read the signs wrong and those who forecast it well deserve credit for doing so... That doesn't necessarily mean the reasoning was 100% solid IMO. I still don't get the confidence numbers from NOAA from range. I think most of us still had little true clue yesterday morning if we are being honest. I'm also not going to credit the first weenie who 'saw' the storm at 10 days as some sort of genius forecaster. I definitely see your point and I think keeping climo is mind, especially in March, to hedge expectations is a good idea. But I think the climo drum beat is a bit much in model threads. I don't think we need to hear 35 times that its uncommon to get widespread 6" snowstorms in March in DC and that the models must be wrong for suggesting such. I'm not sure what my point is, exactly, but I guess its just to say that in anomalous air masses, such as what we have for this storm, sometimes DC can actually over perform. And this isn't directed at you, I'm just responding to your post.
MN Transplant
I think I can safely say that this is the single best sledding day in 4 years. The day after the Feb storm it was drizzling. Too warm again back in Jan 2011. This is ideal.
hosj III
I can't help but think how much more awesome the storm would have been if we we had a cold, saturated air mass in place so we lost nothing to melting or virga.

gymengineer
You can tell how long and packed this winter's been by how slow this sub-forum has been since the snow stopped. The buzz and high after a 6"+ snowstorm earlier in the season would have kept the posts flowing through tonight...

The hills around my house would of been packed with kids. Now I go by those areas and not even a track. Wow, listen to me. I'm old lol..

I'm hitting 44 this Sunday. Think I love sledding just as much as my kids...though hanging out with the other dad's and drinking great craft beers after a few runs...priceless moments. ;-)

wxmeddler
I plan on going sledding tomorrow. Today, I got a new car. If you may have remembered I crashed my old car into a PennDOT sign on a un-plowed (snow covered) exit ramp about a month ago. No ABS on that old car. This one is AWD and 4 wheel ABS. Taking no chances this time around. Very good in rough weather annndd has a thermometer and a sun roof vertical severe storm viewing pane.
mitchnick
The flock of robins that ravaged my front yard holly last week is like "WTF?" now. They're searching around for some more food, and scrounging what they can, but the fat bastids got greedy while there was plenty of food on the ground! I see you're not the only one to notice. The robins imby and at work are fookin' huge like I've never seen before. My wife agrees, the ones she saw today were bigger than any she could recall seeing. They all can't be females and pregnant so maybe they portend our winter dragging on. I know the squirrel I saw at the end of Jan, 2010 was as big as a rabbit and we know what happened a couple weeks later. Anyway, very strange. mitchnick
if BWI had 10" in JAN instead of the reported 9.8", this winter would have been the first winter to have 3 consecutive double digit snowfall months since the great winter of 63/64 (which happened to have 4 in a row! EDIT...almost 4 in a row; DEC had 9.7")

dailylurker
Man, the snow haters are on the ledge today. A few have even jumped. The snow hating post on facebook make me LMAO. I proudly post pics of my 8" of March snow. The haters blew me up. They said I was crazy. I was posting pics from 3am this morning. The black heart, snow haters said. "I was sick in the head" lol. Like I always say. NEVER trust a snow hater.. Until the internet came along. I thought I was sick in the head. Then I found all of you lol. North Balti Zen
Just ran through the 6z GFS, looking at temps, and after early next week, looks like some moderation and a little warmth (per that run, usual caveats).

Ian
I took a tree branch through the roof in July 2010 (I think it was that year). 60-70mph confirmed gusts in my area. It was wild. Even with a hole in the roof, $2k in tree work, and light water damage I enjoyed it. The weaknesses in my trees has been culled the last 4 years. I'm not even worried anymore. The derecho didn't little damage. I was shocked. I found a great high point near my house with a clear view to the w and s. I'll drive over there just to watch the cloud formations approach. I'm going to bring my SLR this year to try and capture interesting images. Unfortunately my house is in a wooded area so there is limited viewing. There's not much more raw power beauty than a good thunderstorm. To be honest getting severe wx isn't all that critical to me around here. I'd take popup lightning storms everyday over a derecho once a year. And while supercells are awesome on the Plains I don't necessarily wish one on my backyard though that could make an awesome shot on the National Mall. I've seen some cool daytime wind bursts around here but that stuff doesn't necessarily make good pics and I don't get off on seeing trees downed or anything. I think people mis characterize our interest in 'severe wx' while acting like other types of weather don't cause significant property and economic issues. This winter is costing a fortune yet I don't blame people for liking snow.

This winter is costing a fortune yet I don't blame people for liking snow. I think raw power of weather is the core of what weird people like us are so into. Flooding rains are pretty wild. I usually go to great falls during the crest. Talk about raw power. Just wild to watch. I agree about storms too. I'm not looking for death and destruction. Just an intense experience. Frequent cg is killer. I love getting woken up in the middle of the night with progressively closer booms. Laying in bed in a dark room with a light show and window rattling thunder is fun as heck. You know storms much much better than me but I like the more discrete slow movers the best. They are prolific lightning producers. Even when they miss, watching the tower flash like a strobe light for an hour is mesmerizing. Typically not much wind with those cells by they put on quite a show sometimes.
