Could be due to evaporational cooling during heavier precipitation rates.  Look west towards Pittsburgh / Elkins and you will see warmer temperatures..

This was a dynamic cooling event- strong vertical motion under that ULL, rising air expands and cools, heavy precip falls from an elevation where ts frozen to a lower elevation, thus cooling the lower part of the column. This was maximized over the higher elevations near Manchester. Where else?!!

This was 70 westbound approaching Mt. Airy at 5pm. By the time I got back to Clarksburg, it had changed back to rain. I'll have to rely on others for the Clarksburg total but it looked well over an inch that was quickly turning into slop.

Well the NAM seems to have pretty well nailed this. I would have never thought it would verify, but it did almost verbatim. Stranger things have happened. wxmeddler, I gotta give you credit for the heads up and at least mentioning this was a possibility, but the blizzard warning idea was a bit over the top, even off the NAM. Periods of heavy wet snow and some gusty winds don't make a blizz. Quite the impressive "surprise" event for my old stomping grounds. Just another ho hum snow event for there.

Today must have been one of the most interesting, and to a degree, intense weather days we've had in a while.  Woke up to low 40's and rain, temps steadily dropped with approach of ull until transition to pslsnr late morning.  Then sn and sn+ for a while with dropping temps to 33 in my area.  Then transition the other way and now we're at 42.  What a ride and what a way to say bye to the Winter of 2013/14!!!   Just think, only about 7 months until we start it all over again...

More like 8 months outside of the mountains. Winters are pretty short around here, Generally 4 months where there is a realistic chance of snow.
