"Here we show that if we build three east-west great walls in the American Midwest, 300m high and 50m wide, one in North Dakota, one along the border between Kansas and Oklahoma to east, and the third one in the south Texas and Louisiana, we will diminish the tornado threats in the Tornado Alley forever."

Seriously though, academics like these thought exercises.  They already have the modeling setup, why not screw with the topography to see what happens.

snow people problems rant: i swear to god, there is nothing more that I do not want than another ice storm. I'll take another 2 feet of snow over more ice and loss of power

 

Climo argues pretty heavily against getting an ice storm of consequence at this point in the year. Not to say it can't happen but I wouldn't worry too much yet.
