Wait, what DC split? :)

 

Look at the terminal radar out of BWI. The split seems to be entirely an artifact of the squall line being right on top of IAD.

the so called "split" is due to the radar beam tilting upward as it scans away from the radar. Returns that are closest to the radar appear lightest. The TDWR out of BWI will show higher reflectivity as its beam is hitting a higher point in the atmosphere than the KLWX radar is.

Correct...it is often falsely assumed that there is a "DC split" when in fact it is the LWX radar beam hitting Bull Run Mountain and reflectivity is lost.
