Southland Braces For Heaviest Rain In Years

Curt Kaplan of the National Weather Service says that Los Angeles International Airport and Hawthorne each had received nearly 2 inches, downtown Los Angeles 1.3 inches, Santa Monica airport 2.3 inches and Malibu nearly 3 inches.

With the brunt of the storm still to come

Forecasters say the storms could be the largest system the region has seen in the last decade.

http://losangeles.cb...-hit-southland/

FORECAST STILL ON TRACK AND IS STILL MORE OF THE SAME. SYNOPTICALLY

A 519 DM UPPER LOW IS SPINNING 500 MILES WEST OF SEATTLE. THE W TO E

FLOW AROUND THE SOUTH END OF THIS LOW IS ADVECTING A HUGE CURRENT OF

MOISTURE WITH PW'S OF 1.5 INCHES OR OVER OVER THE STATE. THERE IS

NOT MUCH CHANGE IN THIS PATTERN THROUGH MONDAY SAVE A SLIGHT TILTING

OF THE MOISTURE STREAM TO A MORE SW TO NE ORIENTATION. THIS SYSTEM

WILL PRODUCE NEAR CONTINUOUS RAIN THROUGH THE NEXT 48 HRS. RAINFALL

FOR THE NEXT 48 HOURS SHOULD RANGE FROM 1.5 TO 3.0 INCHES OVER THE

COASTS AND VLYS AND 3 TO 6 INCHES WITH LOCAL 7 INCH AMOUNTS IN THE

FOOTHILLS AND MOUNTAINS. MOST OF THE RAIN WILL BE LIGHT BUT A FEW

EMBEDDED IMPULSES WILL BRING MODERATE TO LOCALLY HEAVY RAINS TO THE

AREA. SINCE THERE HAS ALREADY BEEN ABOUT 2 TO 4 INCHES OF RAINFALL

ACROSS THE COASTS AND VLYS WITH 3 TO 7 LOCALLY 8 INCHES IN THE

FOOTHILLS AND MTNS...THE BURN AREAS WILL BE VULNERABLE TO DEBRIS

FLOWS IF ANY HEAVIER BURSTS OCCUR OVER THEM. 500 MB TEMPS...LIFTED

INDEXES...AND WEAK JET DYNAMICS THE THREAT OF THUNDERSTORMS HAS

DIMINISHED AND THUNDER IS NO LONGER IN THE FORECAST FOR THE NEXT 48

HOURS.

ON TUESDAY THE UPPER LOW BEGINS TO MOVE SOUTHWARD AS IT PUSHES DOWN

IT ORIENTS THE MOISTURE PLUME INTO A MORE S TO N DIRECTION WHICH

WILL GREATLY ENHANCE PRECIPITATION ON THE SOUTH FACES MTN SLOPES AND

FOOTHILLS. TOWARDS TUESDAY AFTERNOON THE GRADIENTS TIGHTEN AND A

VERY STRONG SOUTH FLOW SETS UP OVER VTA AND L.A. COUNTIES. 40 TO 50

MPH GUSTS ARE CERTAINLY POSSIBLE AT THIS TIME OVER THE MTNS AND

MAYBE EVEN SOME OF THE LOWER ELEVATIONS. FROM MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH

LATE TUESDAY AFTERNOON ANOTHER 1 TO 3 INCHES OF RAIN IS POSSIBLE

OVER COASTS AND VLYS AND ANOTHER 2 TO 5 INCHES OF RAIN OVER THE

FOOTHILLS AND MTNS.

LONG TERM (WED-SAT)

TUESDAY NIGHT AND WEDNESDAY ACTUALLY HOLD THE POTENTIAL TO BE THE

WORST DAY OF THE WEEK. TUESDAY EVENING THE UPPER LOW BEGINS ITS TREK

TO THE EAST. AHEAD OF THE FRONT SOUTH WINDS INCREASE DRAMATICALLY

WITH 70 MPH GUSTS POSSIBLE OVER THE MTNS. IN ADDITION 500 MB TEMPS

COOL AND JET DYNAMIC INCREASE WHICH WILL ALLOW FOR A SLIGHT CHC OF

THUNDERSTORMS. DUE TO THE SOUTH FLOW THERE IS THE POTENTIAL FOR A

AMAZING AMOUNT OF RAINFALL DURING THIS TUESDAY EVENING TO WEDNESDAY

AFTERNOON 24 HOUR PERIOD. THE GFS FORECASTS 1-2 INCHES OF RAIN OVER

THE CSTS AND VLYS AND 2-4 INCHES IN THE FOOTHILLS AND MTNS. THE

HIGHER RESOLUTION NAM HOWEVER CRANKS OUT 2-3 INCHES OVER THE CSTS

AND VLYS AND 3-9 INCHES OVER THE MTNS AND FOOTHILLS. THE CENTRAL

COAST WILL SEE MUCH LESS RAIN DUE TO THE SOUTHERLY FOCUS OF THE

WINDS. MANY THINGS CAN CHANGE FROM NOW UNTIL WED HOWEVER AND THIS

RATHER DIRE FORECAST COULD CERTAINLY TURN OUT TO BE A PAPER

TIGER...BUT EVERYONE SHOULD PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE FORECAST THIS

WEEK.

FLOOD WATCH

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE LOS ANGELES/OXNARD CA

326 AM PST SUN DEC 19 2010

...FLASH FLOOD WATCH IN EFFECT THROUGH THIS EVENING FOR THE

RECENT BURN AREAS IN SANTA BARBARA...VENTURA AND LOS ANGELES

COUNTIES...

.A PLUME OF VERY DEEP SUBTROPICAL MOISTURE ACROSS THE PACIFIC

OCEAN WILL CONTINUE TO STREAM ACROSS SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA OVER

THE NEXT SEVERAL DAYS. THIS...COMBINED WITH A SERIES OF STORM

FRONTS...WILL BRING COPIOUS AMOUNTS OF RAIN TO MUCH OF THE

FORECAST AREA THROUGH AT LEAST MONDAY.

THE HIGHEST RAINFALL TOTALS TODAY THROUGH MONDAY SHOULD OCCUR

OVER THE FOOTHILL AND MOUNTAIN AREAS OF SANTA BARBARA...VENTURA

AND LOS ANGELES COUNTIES...WHERE AN ADDITIONAL 3 TO 6 INCHES OF

RAIN IS EXPECTED...WITH LOCAL ADDITIONAL TOTALS OVER 7

INCHES. THE GREATEST AMOUNTS WILL OCCUR ON AND BELOW SOUTH AND

SOUTHWEST FACING SLOPES. MOST MOUNTAIN AND FOOTHILL AREAS HAVE

ALREADY RECEIVED 3 TO 7 INCHES OF RAIN...WITH LOCAL TOTALS OVER 8

INCHES.

IN COASTAL AND VALLEY AREAS...ADDITIONAL RAINFALL THROUGH MONDAY

SHOULD AVERAGE 1.5 TO 3 INCHES. ALREADY...RAINFALL IN COASTAL AND

VALLEY AREAS HAS TOTALLED 2 TO 4 INCHES...WITH HIGHER AMOUNTS

ACROSS SAN LUIS OBISPO AND SANTA BARBARA COUNTIES.

PERIODS OF HEAVY RAIN TODAY WILL BRING THE POSSIBILITY OF DANGEROUS

DEBRIS FLOWS IN AND NEAR THE THE RECENT BURN AREAS...SUCH AS THE

STATION...MORRIS...JESUSITA AND LA BREA BURN AREAS FROM 2009 AND

THE CROWN BURN AREA FROM 2010.

RAIN MAY TAPER OFF A BIT TONIGHT AND EARLY MONDAY...BUT IT

APPEARS THAT RAIN WILL REDEVELOP AND POSSIBLY BECOME HEAVY AGAIN

LATE MONDAY INTO TUESDAY...ESPECIALLY ACROSS LOS ANGELES COUNTY.

IF THIS TREND CONTINUES...THESE FLASH FLOOD WATCHES MAY HAVE TO BE

EXTENDED INTO TUESDAY.

ANOTHER STORM SYSTEM MAY AFFECT THE AREA WEDNESDAY...WITH YET

ANOTHER STORM POSSIBLE OVER THE HOLIDAY WEEKEND. RAINFALL TOTALS

THROUGH WEDNESDAY HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO BE SOME OF THE HIGHEST

RAINFALL ACCUMULATIONS IN RECENT YEARS.

SHORT TERM (TODAY-WED)

EXTREMELY MOIST FLOW OF AIR WILL CONTINUE

ACROSS THE AREA THROUGH MID WEEK. THE AFTERNOON RAINFALL ENHANCEMENT

ARRIVED ON SCHEDULE AND IS NOW FOCUSING ON LA COUNTY WITH RAINFALL

RATES PEAKING AT ONE HALF TO ONE INCH PER HOUR. THESE RATES WILL

START TO TAPER OFF THIS EVENING IN MOST AREAS, THOUGH A FAVORABLE

SOUTHWEST FLOW WILL MAINTAIN PERIODS OF HEAVY RAIN ACROSS ERN LA

COUNTY MOST OF THE NIGHT. IN ADDITION, ANOTHER BURST OF HEAVIER RAIN

IS EXPECTED TO HIT SLO AND SBA COUNTIES LATER TONIGHT, AND INTO

VENTURA AND LA COUNTIES MONDAY MORNING AND AFTERNOON. THIS IS

EXPECTED TO BE FOLLOWED BY AT LEAST TWO MORE BURSTS OF HEAVY RAIN

THROUGH WEDNESDAY, THOUGH TIMING THESE IMPULSES BEYOND ABOUT 12

HOURS IS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE. SUFFICE IT TO SAY THAT SO CAL WILL

REMAIN VERY MUCH UNDER THE GUN IN TERMS OF SIGNIFICANT RAINFALL. IT

SHOULD BE NOTED THAT THE MODELS ARE EXHIBITING RATHER EXTREME

DIFFERENCES IN HANDLING THE SPECIFIC DETAILS OF THE FORECAST, MOST

NOTABLY WHERE THE PLUME OF HIGHEST MOISTURE WILL BE AND THE EXTENT

OF LOW LVL SOUTH TO SOUTHWEST FLOW. AS AN EXAMPLE, THE GFS AND ECMWF

ARE SHIFTING THE PLUME EAST OF LA COUNTY TUESDAY WHILE THE NAM HOLDS

IT BACK FURTHER WEST OVER LA/VTU AND ERN SBA COUNTIES, RESULTING IN

A HUGE DIFFERENCE IN RAINFALL POTENTIAL FOR THOSE AREAS. THE CURRENT

FORECAST IS STICKING WITH THE WETTER NAM. AS SUCH, THE FORECAST

THROUGH WED CALLS FOR ANOTHER 8-15 INCHES OF RAIN FOR THE FOOTHILLS

AND SOUTH FACING SLOPES FROM SRN SBA COUNTY THROUGH ERN LA COUNTY

AND 3 TO 8 INCHES FOR COAST AND VALLEYS. ADDITIONAL AMOUNTS NORTH OF

PT CONCEPTION ARE EXPECTED TO BE 3 TO 5 INCHES.

Here's some verification that looks pretty much in line with the model forecasts. Highest is about 17".

peak of the rates here and lots of trouble

-According to Lt. Jason Kravetz of the Laguna Beach Police Department, downtown Laguna Beach is under several feet of water,

-Kravetz said Laguna Beach has had several mudslides, mainly in the Laguna Canyon area, and some have hit homes

=---------------------------------------------

IRVINE (AP) — Rain-loosened boulders and mud have blocked access to Orange County mountain homes in Silverado Canyon and firefighters are walking residents out of the area.

The Santa Ana Mountains area has been soaked during the unrelenting storms soaking California for days.

Orange County Fire Authority spokesman Greg McKeown says rock and mud flowed onto Bond Way and firefighters, an urban search and rescue team and swift water rescue squads were dispatched to the Santa Ana Mountains area at 4:22 a.m. Wednesday.

McKeown says streets in the area are inaccessible for firefighters on foot are assisting residents in evacuating the area. An evacuation center has been set up at Calvary Chapel of Orange.

An estimated 17 feet (5.2 meters) of snow has fallen at a monitor near the Kern River in California’s Sierra Nevada mountains in less than a week, according to the U.S. Hydrometeorological Prediction Center.

Central and southern California have borne the brunt of a Pacific storm that has dropped rain by the foot in some places, as well as heavy snow in the mountains, forcing officials to call for the evacuation of 2,000 people earlier this week.

“This is definitely a rare occasion for southern California,” Noel Isla, a National Weather Service meteorologist in San Diego, said late yesterday. “The totals in the end will probably be some of the highest in history.”

Tanbark in Los Angeles County recorded 21.58 inches (55 centimeters) of rain as of early today, according to the weather service. Twin Peaks in San Bernardino County measured 21.46 inches as of yesterday, weather service records show.

17 feet in a week? Not bad.
