to be fair the best went right over his head while I was talking to him, Met that smokes Herb was just a little North of the meat but it was quick. Winds are cranking here

LOL...I think I mentioned this before but MetHerb was the nickname that Met majors had at LSC back in the late 80s.  I think it had something to do with Buger Kings ad campaign at the time featuring a nerdy guy named Herb.

Steady light snow in Peacham as I left around 9.  Measured about 7 am and came up with a 13 inch average.  Drifting was not yet too much of an issue.  Looked like we got 11 after 5 yesterday with about 9 or 10 of that being after the lull.  I had to get out and shovel part of the roof first thing to clear a vent and prevent an ice dam from forming.  good times.

I think there are separate warnings in those cases..similar to what we sometimes see in those low topped squall lines.  However, I don't see them really used anymore.

I think they are called storm warnings...?  I know I've seen something issued in those low topped squall line event where you have no thunder/lightning so severe t'storm warning wouldn't make sense.

Sort of a good question though...I guess it depends on the NWS office and the one at the warning desk.

While technically satisfying all criteria, you won't often see a SVR with snow because the public just doesn't understand the product versus expected conditions. Plus winter storm warnings do cover wind, even an occasional damaging gust among a bunch of other sub-severe gusts. If it was some sort of convective or gravity wave induced feature you could track you always have the option of a HWW, or SPS.

Total of 11.0" as of 7 AM with light snow (maybe with some fr dz mixed in) and 27-28F.  The 8.0" I sampled at 9 last night had 0.72" LE for an 11-to-1 ratio.  About 7" had fallen between 5-9P.  The overnight accum was 3.0" of mangled rimey flake-things (didn't seem at all like sleet) with 0.88" LE, a ratio of 3.4-to-1, so total LE thru 7 was 1.60".  Warm tongue prevented an 18" dump, but 11" is fine.  Snow depth reached 29" by 9 last evening, but the added 3" merely squashed the lighter stuff, so the pack was still 29" this morning.  Farmington COOP reported 14" as of 7 AM.

Took me over an hour to drive the first 2000', as our deadend road hadn't been plowed since 7 last evening and had 4-5" of the dense stuff.  My little 2WD pickup would go about 100', then I'd have to back up and make another run.  Finally, on the first little hill, I ended up against the low-side snowbank (4' tall) and got out the shovel.  45 minutes later I was almost free when the plow went by.  The plow driver got out of his truck, and his push was just enough addition to get my truck into the plowed portion.  Nice morning workout.

3 new.....11 final....okay but still the short end of the stick....congrats lowe hv and ct on your never ending back to back to back to backs

How can you complain about 11" of snow?  Some folks only got an inch in eastern Mass. and you only had 2-3" less than the highest totals in CT.  Springfield is a decent location but it's not a jackpot location.

That's a complaint to you?  It was a pedestrian storm for most of SNE.  That is an objective analysis, no complaints.

Pedestrian is obviously most of our posters reporting the heaviest snow they have seen in years and visibility limited to the house across the street. I think that is far from pedestrian. I think 6-12" that shuts down school, closes businesses, creates numerous accidents and road closures is a very solid snowstorm. What did Rockport, MA gust to? 75 mph? Give pedestrian a rest

Overstating it a bit? Expectations are way out of control around here.

Relatively speaking, we've had many better storms in the past decade and it's really not close.  Not just one or two, at least five.  I'd label it a good or great storm had it not been for the mixing/heavy rain, and adding in some at least minor or moderate coastal flooding.

In terms of totals, for SNE (he said SNE) the overall amounts were nothing earth shattering. That being said, those bands that came through here and the winds, with a round 2 that was very very impressive, made this event extremely memorable for me and many others.

It is not the inches, but what you do with them ;)

This is the problem. We've been spoiled in the past decade plus. Winter isn't an endless string of 6-12+.

And there are plenty of 10+ totals in SNE too. Anytime you're getting 20% of your seasonal average from one storm you're doing just fine.
