NortheastPAWx
All right, to clear up the data mess - 0z GFS onward will have fresh data right?

cfbaggett
I thought the NAM had the old data and the rest of the suite ran with the new. It is my understaning that the 0Z NAM uses the 6 hour forecast of the 18Z GFS for its boundary conditions.
canderson
At some point, the NAM should be defunded and that money moved to creating a new model. Who runs each model exactly? Like, who is in charge and all? And is this board not loading for anyone else well at all?

JamieOber
Either it did or it didn't...sigh...which is it? Can we get a met in here? Well, here's another take. This is dtk, in the Mid-Atlantic thread. He's a met who works on the models at NCEP, talking about dropsondes: They get sent over the GTS so they get used by all the operational centers. By the way, we now have two comprehensive studies showing that these have minimal impact in both a mean, statistical sense and for individual, targeted events for current, state of the art DA/NWP systems. As Ian said in other posts, more data is obviously better (particularly the wind profiles we get from drops)....but it is really hard to justify the cost. JamieOber
So, they might not matter that much, the dropsondes.

NortheastPAWx
I think the RGEM being east would be a given. It was an absurd extreme at 18z.
Santa Clause
Actually pretty big move southeast...close to what it had last night.

NortheastPAWx
If the EURO/UK/GGEM switch east, I'll be worried.

Jmister
Aren't RGEM/GGEM pretty much the same thing? I believe RGEM:GGEM::NAM:GFS Precip shield extends back throughout all of PA this run of the RGEM. Looks like a 18-hr steady snow for many. http://meteocentre.com/models/explorateur.php?lang=en&map=na&run=00&mod=gemreg&stn=PNMPR&comp=1&run2=00&mod2=gemreg&stn2=PNMPR&hh2=045&fixhh=1&hh=

NortheastPAWx
I won't lie that we're not off a good start so far. But we've got several models to go.
Blizz
RGEM looks like it occludes quickly for our area... Kinda odd.. Smacks Virginia then moves north and just has a weak NW precip shield and then explodes over New England. Talk about a snow dome... Still better than NAM... but not that great to be honest. Santa Clause
Yea, it's in a perfect spot for us, but just no real heavy precip. to speak of over most of us.
Jmister
Going on a forecast based only on the 3-hr panel, I'm going to say the GFS is ~50 miles east of 18z based on the northern kicker being ever so slightly east. But I hope I eat my words!
