Is it possible it's also having issues with dryer air in the atmosphere which would cause higher dewpoint depressions and less mixing? Or am I reaching here?

Not sure. I think one of the tangible results is that it is way too warm I think with the boundary layer and surface temps today for many areas. Plus the RAP has a warm bias anyway. It shows Raleigh being mostly rain all day.

So we are being dry slotted despite the cloud deck and no downslopping? Wow!  :axe:

Low dew points right now are agood thing if you want frozen/freezing precip. The moisture advection with this storm will have no problem overcoming the dry low levels, it means that the wedge is going to lock in very strong this afternoon for the Triangle probably stronger than the models show, which seem to be underestimating the cold/dry air, and make it very difficult for temps to get above freezing tonight.

This is good because historically when we get at least dew points in the teens we ussually get a good winter storm. It's bad because that precip is going to be eat up by the dry air for a longer time. I think it's going to drive many north NC people crazy today seeing the radar return stagnate while saturation occurs.

Shouldnt be a long wait. By noon most of the Triangle should be snowing. 1-2 at the latest. This major league warm advection/moisture advection it will quickly overcome the low level dry air this time.

Thanks everyone :D Finally got something for all the waiting.

You will know because the flakes here are HUGE. I'm not kidding when I say I think they are the biggest I've ever seen. These are the flakes you hear other people talk about but never experience. Would be a lot better though if there wasn't a hurricane going on out there. Man..whether it's snow or sleet, it's stinging like hell.

All snow here in Braselton and has been for a while. Approximately 2 inches already. Interesting obs about the large flakes. Not here. They are not small, but certainly not what I would call large. They are closer to the small flakes we got 2 weeks ago.

NE Cherokee County GA

Temp: 27.7

DP: 28

Precip:  Freezing rain started around 12am; switched to sleet sometime before I woke up again around 3am; switched to sleet/pellets a couple of hours ago with a little snow mixed in.

The ground looks like it has over an inch of "snow" but it's more from the ice pellets / sleet than actual snow at this time.  When I woke up and checked at 3am, there was already a thin glaze of ice all over everything.  Without going outside and getting picky about measuring it, it looked like less than .10 coating the items on our back patio.

sleet bomb IMBY.   Looks like we had a tenth or so of ZR before we switched

same here. We have a light glaze and a ton of sleet on top. My office officially shut down for the first time in decades which is good since I don't think I could even make it out of my driveway.
