Otherwise:   reddit poster atrubetskoy compiled a school closure map along with explanation below.

 

Yeah, he should have had special color shading for that sissy county in Va.

In many of the dark blue shaded areas, I'm not sure they *ever* get one-off snowfalls of 2+ feet anyway.  I know that most of the lower elevations of Montana have not, and I'd imagine the same is true of Wyoming, North Dakota, etc.  If you want huge snowfalls like that, you're probably better off in Baltimore or something.

 

The 24" shaded area is absurd.  Except maybe the lake belt and the elevations, everyone is shutting down for an 18" storm.  Frankly, most of those areas would shut down for 12" also.

That is very true. The other part is that this doesn't account for wind. Schools can close in ND with no new snow due to ground blizzards.
