winterymix
Mods/admins: Please move or delete this thread if desired. Not sure if anyone is interested or if it has been already discussed. Otherwise: reddit poster atrubetskoy compiled a school closure map along with explanation below. Yeah, he should have had special color shading for that sissy county in Va. http://www.theatlantic.com/education/archive/2014/01/map-how-much-snow-it-typically-takes-to-cancel-school-in-the-us/283470/
MN Transplant
The 24" shaded area is absurd. Except maybe the lake belt and the elevations, everyone is shutting down for an 18" storm. Frankly, most of those areas would shut down for 12" also.
North Balti Zen
Burlington Vermont schools shut down for a 6-10 inch forecast storm earlier this week Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Ian
This map is one great sign how full of **** the media has become. Everyone ran with it for hits without caring if it was right.
wxdude64
Looks like they took average snowfall and did a ratio against that and decided what this number would be.
mattie g
Canadian schools never close. So much for everyone thinking they're a bunch of [w]ussies.
Mercurial
In many of the dark blue shaded areas, I'm not sure they *ever* get one-off snowfalls of 2+ feet anyway. I know that most of the lower elevations of Montana have not, and I'd imagine the same is true of Wyoming, North Dakota, etc. If you want huge snowfalls like that, you're probably better off in Baltimore or something. That is very true. The other part is that this doesn't account for wind. Schools can close in ND with no new snow due to ground blizzards.
