I don't see much of a problem here.

Forecasters who hype a forecast will at some point get a reputation for hyping.

Forecasters who keep it real develop a reputation for being realistic.

Naive people who believe things they hear on the internet and in the media without doing their do diligence to confirm as true what they hear...they, get what they deserve.

You can't make this stuff up.

The NJ blizzard that wasn't: The anatomy of a social media misfire

http://www.nj.com/weather-guy/index.ssf/2014/02/the_nj_blizzard_that_wasnt_the_anatomy_of_a_social_media_misfire.html#incart_river

I remember when I was younger, people spread rumors and stretched truth as well...big time. I remember a neighbor, sometime in the 90s, saying "they say we could get 3 or 4 feet this weekend.....we haven't had a storm like that since the 60s or 70s at least". In reality, of course, we NEVER had a storm like that, nor anything close to 4 feet. The tendency is to also exaggerate the total by say...1-3 feet. So the talk of 1-2 feet possible quickly becomes 3-4 feet, and so on. As far as this year, there's been more rumors because there's been more cold and snow. It also fits in well with talks of the dreaded monster, the POLAR VORTEX, which is almost personified lol. People tend to believe rumors more easily this year because of all of that. And lastly, bigger rumors and more extreme exaggerations make better conversations. It wouldn't sound as good saying to someone at the deli "so have ya heard about the 1-3 inches we're expecting from the clipper this weekend?". Nope.....it makes better talk saying "possible blizzard this weekend, a few feet.....". I guess people feel that it takes away the awkwardness of watching someone cut deli meat, or having to ask how their family is that they never met ;)

Oh brother... Here we go again.

http://www.theweatherspace.com/2014/02/09/most-reliable-model-projecting-a-march-1993-like-super-storm-noreaster-for-the-eastern-united-states/

"(TheWeatherSpace.com) – The most reliable medium range model thus far this winter is projecting a track that of the March 1993 Super Storm Nor’easter up the East Coast Wednesday and Thursday of This Week, bringing widespread blizzard conditions as that one did, including severe thunderstorms capable of tornadoes across Florida.

We are not far out from it, but a system that will bring severe thunderstorms capable of tornadoes across Florida later Wednesday into Wednesday night will start off the domino effect for this storm. A piece of energy will break off and move up the east coast next week, which will bring a slew of weather conditions similar to that of March 1993′s Super Storm.

Le sigh.

"...around the first week of March." That's some great forecast reliance. And "100+ million" people affected? How does one caculate a figure like that?

They must delete the comments because I don't see any right now.

I was referring to comments on facebook where the person posted this...not on the actual website.

If people are going to write an article knocking a bad forecast they should know what they are talking about. The article written is just is bad lol
