Torontonian
I agree. However, I would rather have a constant snowpack than have 30 cm snowfalls that melt a week later, as happens in the Mid-Atlantic states. This winter is still an A- for me. The fact we haven't had as much snow as surrounding areas prevents it from getting an A or A+ I agree with this A- rating. Have been watching winter events closely for last three decades and this winter has been eventful. Major ice storm, constant snow cover, decent snowfalls, and fairly extreme cold spells. Too many winters were write offs downtown here. The winter of 2007-08 is benchmark for me with an A.

I rate this Winter with a A- as well. In order to fully satisfy me, we need atleast another 30cm from now through early April. When you look at the broader picture a B would be respectable, but locally its been pretty eventful. We escaped 3 storms without seeing any rain even though it was forecasted and one being the ice storm. The latest Euro weeklies are very encouraging for Winter lovers, lol. The cold persists right through mid March. Sadly enough, models are trying to build back a +PNA which may cut off the Gulf and leave us with a zonal pattern again -_-. Great Lakes Ice cover may reach a new record high this season.

If the same conditions applied here, I should have well over 110 on the ground, instead of the approx. 50 that is here now.
WestCoaster
I'm not sure how anyone the GTA can rank this winter in the "excellent" category, unless it's completely contingent on below normal temperatures. Snowfall has been only slightly above average. I guess you may consider the longevity of the snowpack, but I don't find anything beautiful about the brown crust on the side of the roads. Perhaps a negative to living downtown. The lower end of "very good" or "B" seems more appropriate, at least in my mind; hence, B- I was up near Canada's Wonderland on Sunday and only measured 45cm on the ground. I was a bit surprised as I thought areas north had been doing much better than that. I drove through Orillia last Thursday and wow did they ever have a lot of snow! 65 cm on the ground up there. I agree. Compared to Detroit, Chicago or NYC, this Winter hasn't been all that great in the snow department. Would be nice to get a decent widespread snowstorm (>15cm). I live near Wonderland, lol. The Sun did some damage to the snowpack last week, but today its back up to 55-60cm again.

snowstormcanuck
Prelim grade still stands at a B/B-. Good winter, but not excellent or exceptional. <based on snowfall. If you're a cold wx nut then this winter has to be A/A+ material.

If you're a cold wx nut then this winter has to be A/A+ material. No massive snowstorms but generally an average snow year coupled with brutal cold has allowed for the deepest depth and snowbanks in years. I remember seeing the number of snow cover days a couple weeks back, but does anyone think we have a legit chance at breaking that record this year? In my opinion, a long lasting snowpack is a nice component for a winter to have, but does not really carry a lot of weight IMO along with temp departures. If we exclude the ice storm and feb 5 snowstorm from this winter, i think its a B-. With that being said, i think its a B+/A- winter as those were pretty awesome events imby(historic ice storm and 3-4" an hour rates with the feb storm). Ottawa Blizzard
Dude, your not old enough to have watched how dismal most downtown T.O winters can be. This. It's been the third coldest winter of the past 50 years in downtown Toronto and the 11th coldest of the past century. This is a standout winter that people in Toronto will refer back to for years, if not decades to come. My dad was genuinely surprised when I pointed out that snowfall is below average this year as he says it feels like it's been never ending. blizzardof96
Interesting to see the 4km NAM much cooler with SFC temps when compared to the GFS/euro regarding fridays event. Keeps sfc temps below freezing for much of the event. Curious to see if its on to something given the snowpack and NE flow that sets up before the warm front lifts north. Not impressed with the high over QC thats ~1018mb so not really giving the NAM the time of day ATM.

snowstormcanuck
I thought we were only at 100 cm for the season thus far. Doesn't Toronto average about 120cm? Pearson averages 108.5cm, but that's for the whole season. Year-to-date there should normally be around ~80cm. This year it's currently at 101 or 102 after today's snowfall. So Pearson's 20+cm above normal.

Kind of ironic that the year the normals are updated we end up with above average snowfall and the third coldest winter in 50 years.

I don't think a very cold winter makes it a standout winter. Just because you're obsessed with cold doesn't mean everyone else solely uses it to determine how "great" they view the winter. I don't know if things get much more dismal than 2011-2012. I'm not sure how my age has anything to do with how I feel about this winter. I haven't been very impressed with the snow events to give this winter an A grade. I'm glad to see that somebody else (ssc) sees this winter in the B range, too.
