uofmiami
That's like 1/2" ice across LI with up to 3/4" east of LGA. Oh joy, I hope that is wrong otherwise Great Neck will be a skating rink!
Saturn510
I am pretty sure with the ice accumulation you would have to incorporate some kind of ratio to get an approximate accrual.
Zelocita Weather
Well per the nam, from about rt.78 north if we can get 1" of snow, with a 3:1 ratio of sleet we could get to 4" of snow/sleet....
jm1220
That's like 1/2" ice across LI with up to 3/4" east of LGA. Going to be very close along the shores-hopefully we have mostly a 33F rain that runs off but soaks into the snowpack and makes it inpenetrable. But it's looking like from maybe the Southern State on north is in for a very rude awakening.

And it woudl be the greatest blessing ever because we'd avoid the ZR. I am really thinking NW NJ can luck out w/ Sleet tomorrow. Please...
Saturn510
If there was really an inch of ice, that would be crippling.

NorthShoreWx
the ice storm in December 1973 deformed every pine tree and bush along the belt parkway in Brooklyn and Queens...Howard Beach and East New York (where I worked at the time) had at least an inch of ice everywhere...Streets were a skating rink...Where I lived we got more sleet so ice accumulations were less...Northern N.J. had more snow and sleet than ice...It started as snow but after an hour or so it changed to freezing rain as northerly winds dropped temperatures into the 20's and low 20's at night...The 24 hour storm ended with temperatures in the 20's...I drove to work that morning and saw a few trees that fell under the weight of the ice...later that year there were a few more icing events that started as snow or ended as snow...That year had more ice than any year from the 60's and 70's...1993-94 had more ice but didn't have a storm like Dec. 73...The ice wasn't forecast as I remember but it was 40 years ago and I could be wrong... Benchmark icestorm on LI was 1/13/1978. That winter had a lot going on!

jm1220
Wow, that's a huge difference from the NAM, that's for sure. I highly doubt a low track like that given the cold air in place inland, though.

Stormlover74
All the tress and power lines are caked here pretty good too. Wonder how much worse that makes this. I would think it would take less ice accretion to create problems. If a tree can support a 1/4" of ice it probably won't when it has several inches of snow already weighing it down.
