Snow is underway here in Metuchen with a light coating on the ground already, as temps have dropped to 33F at the surface, allowing accumulations to occur. I seriously hope this helps people let go of the myth that snow will have a hard time accumulating after a warm day, as snow will accumulate, even at marginal temps, if the rate is high enough, plus the surface temp cools to freezing quite quickly with falling snow. Going to be a tough morning commute with 1-2" per hour rates through much of rush hour.

Wow, just wow! Just got in, after dropping our son off at the train station, then an early doc's appt, then shoveling for the first time in this storm. When I left the house at 7:00 am, we had 1" on the ground and it was falling moderately. As of 9:00 am, we have 3.5" on the ground, which is a bit over 1" per hour.

If we hold onto rates like this for another 4-5 hours, we're going to get 8-10" of heavy, wet snow. By mass, that would be about twice as much snow as we got with ~10" on 1/21, assuming 8-10:1 ratios vs. 20:1 last time and that amount of snow could lead to branches/wires down and power outages, especially given how pasty the snow is and the lack of high winds, which will keep the snow on the trees.

I see Mt. Holly put us in the 6-8" range on the map (which I think they'll increase at least one more time) and extended the WSWarnings to Warren/Morris and they say that the snow/rain line is now from about Wilmington over to Belmar and sinking SE-ward, so everyone should get some snow, just about. Roads are treacherous right now.

that can't be more than 3 miles from where i am downtown...nary a flake...what a cutoff

Wow, that's insane. Hopefully you and bluehens can get in on the action soon.

Just hit a lull here; in fact, we've flipped back over to light rain, at least for the moment. Edit: Mixing with snow.

I can see a few snowflakes beginning to drift past my 8th floor window in Wilmington.  Wife is reporting heavy snow just 6 miles north of here.

yeah, i'm hearing some pings, too...percentage-wise, i'd guesstimate: 80 rain/19.8 sleet/.2 snow

edit: 80/19.99/.01

Visability dropping appreciably to the north and east....changeover in the city is imminent I think....then all hell breaks loose on the roadways

Yeah its a crying shame it didnt happen like 3 hours earlier because the storm is moving quickly and we'll only be in the heavy stuff for a couple more hours at most.  It is really coming down now though.....secondary city roadways already covered in 10 minutes.

Yeah, it really is a shame. Don't expect the heavy precip to last. Down here in Newark its lighter in the last 10 mins and we are back to a snow/sleet mix. Once you are out of the yellow bands, it isn't much.

I really don't see any more than a slushy inch or two from this. Far cry from the 4-8 predicted.
