Damage In Tolland

Schools are starting to cancel afternoon stuff here.  It's too late to do an early release.  If this band continues to pummel us this is going to be really bad in Bourne, Plymouth, Wareham, Sandwich etc. as the buses run in 90-120 minutes  Just a poor, poor job of alerting to the potential.

Not sure what happened but I hope they address it in the future.

TV media doing no better a job.  Cindy had the best map at least she has 2-4 here.

Yes it was poorly forecast or more accurately, poorly conveyed by many. Models had been hinting for a while and, at the very least, mets should have been playing up the potential more even if the models were not a big hit verbatim.

That said, what is the big deal? You keep talking about how this is some kind of disaster for the schools, aside from the slightly unexpected nature of this, its a run of the mill snowfall. Its not enough to get stuck in, its not going to kill anybody.

Perhaps as bad as the media/NWS failing to give adequate warning is the flip side, people like you making too big a deal out of the effects. Nevermind the doomsday crap, its part of the dumbing down/cancel school at first flakes mindset we have today. It used to take 8"+ at the exact right time to cancel school as recently as the mid to late 90's.

Roads including most secondary arteries like 3a, 6a etc are/were snow covered.  Side streets are totally untouched because 8-12 hours ago this area was forecast to have under an inch with only a 70% chance of snow...so the local DPW's weren't ready to roll.   Rte 6 is backed up 2 exits due to spin outs and now buses have to navigate the entire mess with peoples kids on them.   A better forecast 10 hours ago probably would have had school managers looking at early releases or bagging on school entirely.  It also would likely have led to towns and MA highway being better prepared.  More importantly it would give parents the ability to make the decision of whether or not they should listen to you in thinking it's no big deal....or as parents make the decision to pick their kids up or have them at home entirely.

Who cares what they did when we were kids?  We also walked in 10" of snow as cars sped by on unplowed roads because back then they didn't call school.  You know why they do now?  Because of issues like what happened in Providence and elsewhere where bad forecasts left kids in bad situations.

You may not think it's a big deal to have kids driving around on snow covered roads in moderate or heavy snow in buses with no seatbelts.  A lot of parents would disagree with you.   These forecasts sucked and if you've got a vested interest in them don't hide behind your tag.

I'm a doomsday guy?  LOL...  Get bent on that one.

CJ don't mean to get testy but don't on the same token minimize the risk to peoples kids or cavalierly dismiss the implications of what seems like an easy forecast to have gotten "more" correct down here 24 hours ago. The Euro/RGEM/NAM and GFS were all pretty much in sync more than 24 hours ago. Heck into the early AM hours this morning we were still under only a 70% of some snow.

The roads are awful, if we get a little break here it may not be a nightmare for the buses, if we don't and it ramps up again prior to 2 it's going to be tough sledding.  Side Roads have literally not been touched.  Let's not forget budgets are tapped down here so they aren't going to have trucks rolling around unless there's a need.  This was the forecast 20 hours ago....and really up through now it's still only for 1-2" here.

We are catching a bit of a lull which will allow them to catch up hopefully in time for the buses.

The forecasters have had a tremendous winter season and I've said as much.  But this one was stubbornly bad.  Stubborn being the operative word.
