Ranger
I'm getting concerned already here in north GA that we're not going to get as much as they predicted because of the mixing issues right now. Reporting a mix of sleet and light snow. Looking at the radar, looks like most of the precip is south and east of us unless a lot redevelops west of us later today/tonight. Haven't really looked at it from the Georgia perspective. I would guess you get the full mixed bag...but a major event. The actual storm for the TN Valley really gets cranking as the low deepens early this afternoon. Would include north Georgia as well I would think...and also including now. I would be hoping like heck that does not go to freezing rain. Good luck and be safe.

Look at the pressure, and how the storm is filling in to our west. Good things will happen later today.

Carvers Gap
My sister live in Stone Mountain, GA....she just lost her power....going to be a long couple of days down there... Had heard Georgia Power called back-up over the weekend. So, hopefully those folks won't be w/out power long. Have to think some areas it is going to be bad in sw NC, upstate SC, and ne GA. zippity
We are getting just a bit nervous about the warm temps here in north Alabama. Hope it manages to get cold enough for snow. Schools, businesses are shut down but the roads are fine.
Tabbycat
You know I'm desperate when I resort to Yahoo Answers for a Dewpoint question from years ago. Is there a combination of temps+dewpoint that a novice can look at and still feel safe with snow? It makes me nervous to see MRX say a steady 31 when it's already 35. Dewpoint is 21. Jed33
Actually MRX had highs in most zones, even Tri in the mid 30s at the 6AM update on the zone forecast this morning.
Carvers Gap
NWS up to 5-11" for TRI (edit). Boys at MRX must be watch'em some of the RAP model. Man the 15UTC RAP just hammers E TN. Hammers...
Tabbycat
Their temps grid in the AFD has mid 30s here also, but in the zone forecast it says a steady 31, so that's why I'm confused.

Jed33
Their spread in accums seems kinda big but then again how often do we see these totals I've never lived anywhere where the forecast was actually that high on the totals, so I don't know haha
BamaChemE
I'm not liking our situation here in North Bama. Just not seeing the temps get there today

Just do a google search on Wetbulb temps calculator. Still correlates to a 31 degree temp if the airmass is precipitated into.
Tabbycat
BamaChem, I was reading the Area Forecast Discussion for Middle TN and they said in the southern counties, close to you, it may mix a little first, but they expect the precip to cool the temps enough to still change over to snow. Tabbycat
Mr. Bob, is "Actual station pressure (Psta) =" Barometer from my zone forecast page? If not, I'll look for another calculator. Thank you!

I would think at this stage of the juncture that the ground will be too saturated for much accumulation because it has been raining here since last night. Check out the RAP map I posted in the storm discussion. The RAP brings the comma head of the low as far south as northern Alabama. Daytime totals, as Mr Bob correctly alluded to, would be eaten into by mixing and rain. I think tonight/late evening is when things could get really get going. As MRX stated, have to be patient for this thing to develop....But it is frustrating at times.

Thank you! The first one that popped up was not so complex; just temperature and RH...not as perfectly accurate but good enough for this use.... Silas Lang
So I know most of us have been focusing on the precipitation, but how bad is the wind going to be in East TN? Also I've seen a couple of you post about "thundersnow". Is that still a possibility?
Tabbycat
Snowing at the airport I guess. On the zone forecast page for MRX is says "Light Snow". Not in West Knox yet, though.
Carvers Gap
Just looked at the Canadian(global), that storm looks to slow down a tad around DELMARVA and deepen. Can't tell if there is a hand-off of energy or if the low just finally consolidates. I have seen this on a couple of other models and assumed it was just a glitch. What do you all think? Silas Lang
Wow, this snow means business. At the rate its falling will be up to a half inch in the next few minutes. And this is supposed to last till Tomorrow? If true, I have a feeling Tri Cities will be on the high end of accumulation estimates.
Tabbycat
Carvers, what is the significance to us, if any, if the storm stalls way up there?
