This season (including March) could yet have a 25" block-buster up its sleeve.

Having said that ...it's a nice lesson in why nickle-dime seasons are usually how you get your bigger snowier years.  I'd take twenty 8" storms over two 30" any day.

Totally agree.  I was actually thinking about that the other day (during the last storm).  I know the question comes up every so often about which type of winter people prefer more - One or two "big snow(s)", or multiple "smaller" storms?  I like the smaller systems that add up, as long as there's not a ton of rain in between.

Check out my sig. Not one 12" storm yet this year.

I'd probably take that too considering one year would give me 160" of snow and the latter 60" of snow.

If ever pulled off a KU in March, then this would quickly evolve into one for the ages the for me.

I'm betting the over on 20" imby for the month of March, and with 71" as I type, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that 2014 may end up on hallowed ground.

Less than 3 inches of snow seperate us. Interesting

I'm total opposite. Give me 2 30 inchers and bare ground rest of the winter.

You don't appreciate how rare those storms are.

I do..but I'd rather have constant snowcover and nickel and dimers than have 60 inches of snow in 2 storms with nothing but grass and mud in between. Half the fun is tracking and the anticipation of each event. 2 times a winter with partly sunny and a chance of grass..the rest of the time..well..that's not for me

Tracking snow events is a lot like fishing.  Catching small fish keeps things interesting, but occasionally landing the big ones are the ones you remember forever.  The big blizzards of February 2013, 1978, 1983 etc will always be remembered by me - today's event was great, but it will blur into the memory of many other snow events.

I'll take the 30 incher's any day.

Im usually in for the less events but bigger totals but this month has altered my thoughts a bit. I enjoy the tracking and even if it doesnt pound my yard, i can still watch some peeps in the region get pounded. Less events equals less tracking...but there is something about that big one that still tilts the scale.

Bigger events but less frequently is slightly > smaller events but more frequently

If I had bare ground all winter, but 2 30" storms...count me in.

Lol, as fantastic as it looks outside right now and all the days of enjoying the winter sports I would pass on that totally. Winters to me are not measured in big storms but rather totality, this is getting up there with the best, cold, deep cover and constant threats. Perfect. Seen enough rare storms, going to be hard to top 78/13/97 anyways

30-40 inch snowpacks are almost as rare or rarer than 30" storms depending on where you are. So you can make an argument both ways for the rarity or anomalous nature of it.

The power of huge storms is pretty exciting though. However, taking Tip's literal choice...I'd pick diming my way to a 160" winter since that is way more anomalous and likley involves record snow depths.

But taking it less literally, a bunch of 8" events adding to like a 90-100" season or a 70" season made primarily up of two 30 inch storms? I'd definitely pick the latter since those storms are so awesome to experience.

pretty much how I feel. If it wasn't for the lousy weather in Jan, I'd rate this as a near perfect book ended winter.

Winters are never wire to wire here and the big events make me feel like I spent the night with Carmen Electra in her prime. It's funny....as much snow as I've had...it hasn't really reached that pinnacle that 2005, 2011..etc have reached. Just hasn't felt that way to me. Hopefully that changes.

The shade side of my house where the wind blew drifts is way above my waist for a long stretch. Honestly out back tonight I fully expected to see caribou. We had a sticky snow here and it's plastered everywhere. Tomorrow morning should be beautiful. The piles are most impressive too, probably rivaling 2011 because of the wetter nature. To me right now tonight it's perfection.

Interesting.  All light and fluffy here.
