I finished with 0.82" precip and 1.2" snow with this event. Temps and dews spiked into the mid-40s for all of 2 hours overnight before falling. Avg snow depth now about 14" of glacier this moring. Spots below the icy surface of the dense snowpack still heavy mashed potatoes, but that will freeze in time. DTW is 37F but dewpoint 28F. Cant wait to see what core sample comes out at today lol, and cant wait to see if I can legitimately walk on top of over a foot of snowpack by, say, Sunday. Considering this was the extent of our torch that all models were screaming at around Feb 10th or so (2-3 days in 50s to possibly 60s, with 40s on either side) and we head into the deepfreeze....I consider it a win for sure.

I thought this satellite shot of Lake Superior was really cool. The way the cracks in the ice appear and parallel the shorelines.

Has actually come up a couple degrees this morning. Still just as windy though.

Snow depth 14"...core sample...4.0"!

Is that a lot of liquid for there?  Flooding issues?

I worry about that here every year and this so even more.  Lots of snow in the midwest and very little melt.  All that liquid that fell yesterday, most of it just went into the snowpack.   Longer we keep snowpack/longer the cold hangs around...   Need a few weeks of moderate temps in March to slowly release it.

damn, you were so close too!

S Lakes took a huge hit, ouch...

Actually we really didnt take that bad of a hit. I dont know if thats model simulated or what, but its terrible for S MI. We lost several inches but gained water content. When I did interactive it looked like more? Weird. Either way, clearly bad for S MI.

Heres a run down of this mornings snow depths per observers in SE MI.

Bottom row of counties (Lenawee & Monroe). Snow depths ranged from 7-9"...with an oddly low report of 3" and oddly high report of 14".

Second row of counties (Washtenaw & Wayne). Snow depths ranged from 9-15".....with an oddly low report of 7" (but its really not that odd if you are familiar with that observer )

Third row of counties (Livingston, Oakland, & Macomb). Snow depths ranged from 11-17".

Fourth row of counties (Shiawasee, Genessee, Lapeer, & St Clair). Snow depths ranged from 6-13"...with an oddly high report of 20"

Fifth row of counties & Thumb (Saginaw, Tuscola, Sanilac, & Huron). Snow depths ranged from 7-20".

Official snow depth at 7am

DTX: 17"

ARB: 15"

DTW: 14"

FNT: 13"

MBS: 20"

Ive never seen this much liquid in the snow here. This is snowbelt stuff. on Tuesday, retired met Bill Deedler did a core sample in his yard, and he had 20" depth and 3.8" water, and he said that in all the years he worked at the NWS (started in '74) he couldnt recall a core that high.

Hmm...interesting...that map you posted was generated yesterday...heres the latest one generated (I enhanced the color a bit just to show the variability according to this map). How in the hell have the southern areas GAINED depth, especially in Ohio, after they soared into the 50s briefly overnight?

First map is today, 2nd is yesterday. wtf?

Nasty Winter conditions with road closers and numerous accidents this afternoon. 3" of snow today and severe blowing of that snow. Back to Winter.

Interesting note.... looks as if the entire southern half of lake MI is basically ice free. shouldn't last very long with the cold air but I figured this storm would do a number. Driving today on a high road, I caught a glimpse of the mouth of Grand Traverse bay, and I even saw a few small patches of water. Will be interesting to see the northern lake ice. seems like there's been a good deal lake enhancement of the snow today.

Still a good 4-5" of rock solid glacier here.  Have a ton of little branches/twigs down from the wind last night, and earlier windy days.  Gonna be a full day adventure cleaning up the yard when spring hits.

New furnace completed today.  It can get as cold as it wants to now as far as I'm concerned.

Was in downtown Chicago today on 20th floor of a building overlooking the lake..

It was frozen as far as the eye could see last week... Now blue open water to the horizon and to maybe 100 yards of the shoreline..

A cam on a buoy would have given quite a show with the 40 to 50 mph winds and the ice breaking up...we need a GoPro out there somewhere

Perhaps more damage to the ice on the lake than I thought.

4-10" expected now

THOUGH OUR STRONGER DYNAMICS HAVE DEPARTED...LOCALLY HEAVY SNOW

CONTINUES TO FALL BETWEEN APX AND PLN. THIS IS EXACTLY WHERE ONE

WOULD EXPECT IT IN W/WSW FLOW ON NORTHERN LAKE MI...IF WE DIDN/T

HAVE A TON OF ICE COVER OUT THERE. OR DO WE? WE KNOW THAT THE

STRONG WINDS OF THE LAST 24-36 HOURS HAVE REMOVED /SOME/ OF THAT ICE

COVER (WITH THE LEELANAU CO COAST LOSING SOME OF ITS ICE CAVES).

HOW MUCH...WE DON/T KNOW...BUT THE LAKE RESPONSE (IF THAT IS

INDEED WHAT IT IS) IS IMPRESSIVE.

WITH INDIAN RVR/WOLVERINE ALREADY AROUND 7 INCHES...WILL SHORTLY UPGRADE A HANDFUL OF NW LOWER COUNTIES TO A WARNING. ALMOST FEELS LIKE A CASE OF LOCKING THE BARN DOOR A BIT TOO LATE...BUT IT/S JUST SNOWING TOO HARD TO BE HAPPY W/O A STRONGER

HEADLINE. THINGS WILL CERTAINLY DIMINISH IN THAT AREA DURING THE

DAY SATURDAY AS DRIER MID-LEVEL AIR FINALLY CREEPS FURTHER NORTH.
