Well, you couldn't time this any better.  Furnace crapped the bed sometime in the middle of last night, and today was the first day in weeks above freezing.  Just glad the ridiculous cold is over since it may be a few days to a week until the new furnace arrives.

Made it all the way up to 38 today.

That's a real bummer. I had to replace my furnace in February of 2008. Actually I think it was this very same week.

Looks like Saturday night will be the coldest/most challenging. I hope you have some space heaters or something to keep warm with!

Made it to 30° here today. Didn't hit freezing, but I know it will soon.

Snow compacted a little, 13" depth. Sunday will be Day 70 of snow cover.

Pics of this mornings hoar frost. It was just gorgeous. That is very rare around here. The first several pics are when the fog was still burning off so the sky was a murky hazy gray still, but once it cleared, blue sky took over.

I had never seen anything like that around here before that I can remember. That type of stuff is usually reserved for the places in northern Oakland county or around Ann Arbor on those nights where they end up like 10 or more degrees colder than the surrounding areas.

28 and sunny... First day with snow melt in like ever

Apparently today was the first time it had made it above 30 at WFO DTX since January 15th. Definitely felt "spring-like" outside today with all the sun, I actually hacked away at some of the glacier that has formed near the curb at my house in shorts. You could have legit got a tan out there today with all the snow reflecting...

Still got about 13" of snow on the ground here in spite of the melt. A little less depth than the 'burbs I'm sure, on the borderline-freezing days like today the urban heat island really works against snowpack. I saw some bare grass along I-94 in the sheltered areas earlier today... a sight I have not seen for at least a month.

That sucks.  Luckily you missed the nasty stuff, but even this kind of cold still requires the furnace enough.   Did you have to buy some space heaters or do you have a back up? I've had this worry about my own furnace (its an early 90's Trane) I actually bought a woodstove a few weeks back, but won't put it in until this summer (plus i need to figure out a source for firewood).  Its more for a backup then a main heat source.   My mom had her furnace go out during a very cold stretch many years ago and I think she was using her oven (natural gas) to keep it as warm as she could (think it dropped into the 50Fs).

Chilly tonite with that breeze...around 10F here.

Hopefully you get it replaced by the week of the 24th, as the cold is set to return after the thaw.

Sorry to hear that Cyclone with all the expense and inconvenience this entails.  Hopeful that warmer wx arrives soon.

Thanks fellas.  Yeah I already had one space heater, but the furnace dude was kind enough to bring me two others to borrow.  They're all working pretty nicely, actually keeping it in the mid 60s in here.  Luckily the basement is deep enough it doesn't seem to get too cold down there past a certain point.

The furnace is a boiler.  Basically the water pump that circulates the hot water through the system crapped out, and then leaked water down into the electronics, which shorted out 3 different relays lol.  It also apparently ruined the gas valve, so got the main shut off to keep gas from seeping in.  Fun times.

Down to 15 here.  Supposed to hit 7 tonight and -2 tomorrow night.  Really looking forward to the warm up later this weekend.  Can't get here soon enough.  :guitar:

Another sun soaked day...  be interesting to see how many sunny/mostly sunny days we've had this winter...

Up to 8F now.

Geos-

Could you walk to Michigan or is there still some open water out there?

A couple days ago there was open water near the shore. So I don't think I would risk taking a walk on it! I'm sure a small animal could walk on it easily.

Up to 17° here now with sunshine increasing.

DVN adjusted the point down to -5 tonight.  Have 5 electric space heaters humming tonight.  3 upstairs, 2 down in the basement.  Main concern is to keep the pipes from freezing.  At least after tonight the subzero garbage should be over.  By the time the next wave of cold hits next weekend, or the following week the heat should be back.

Looking out the window and seeing all the surrounding houses with steam plumes rising from their chimneys is sort of hauntingly depressing.  They're all comfy and warm.  Warm here too with the heaters going, but the security of space heaters is not very good compared to a home heating system.  Just goes to show that every time you hear your furnace kick on with a night like this you should be thankful lol.
