CoastalWx
Notice how the elements east of the band are flying west, but the band itself is moving rather slowly west. All that air is converging and getting lifted. Frontogenesis. It also is similar to what happened in early November when the dryslot raced into ORH, but southern areas like Kevin and Steve hung onto the snow. You can see that going on over the Cape with moisture moving sw.

Baroclinic Zone
000 FXUS61 KBOX 210120 AFDBOX AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE TAUNTON MA 820 PM EST MON DEC 20 2010 .NEAR TERM /UNTIL MIDNIGHT TONIGHT/... -- Changed Discussion --BASED ON LATEST OBSERVATIONS...REPORTS AND RADAR TRENDS INCREASED SNOWFALL AMOUNTS ACROSS PORTIONS OF THE REGION. WE ARE NOW GOING FOR 7 TO 14 INCHES ON CAPE COD AS RADAR SHOWING 35 DBZ RETURNS WORKING INTO THE REGION. IN ADDITION...40 TO 45 MPH WIND GUSTS COMBINED WITH THE WET SNOW MAY RESULT IN A FEW DOWNED TREE LIMBS AND SCATTERED POWER OUTAGES. ACROSS NANTUCKET...WE UPGRADED TO A WINTER STORM WARNING FOR 5 TO 10 INCHES OF SNOW. IN ADDITION...WINDS ARE GUSTING TO 50 MPH IN THIS REGION. TRAVEL IS NOT RECOMMENDED ACROSS CAPE COD OR NANTUCKET TONIGHT WITH THE HEAVY SNOW AND STRONG WIND GUSTS. THIS IS A SERIOUS STORM FOR A SMALL PORTION OF OUR COUNTY WARNING AREA. STRONG WINDS AND HEAVY SNOW MAY RESULT IN NEAR WHITE OUT CONDITIONS AT TIMES. WE ALSO JUST UPGRADED EASTERN PLYMOUTH COUNTY TO A WINTER STORM WARNING AS MODERATE TO HEAVY SNOW WAS CONTINUING TO BACK IN OFF THE OCEAN. ACROSS EASTERN MA...WIDESPREAD LIGHT SNOW WAS BACKING IN OFF THE OCEAN AND THERE WERE POCKETS OF MODERATE TO HEAVY SNOW. THE 12Z ECMWF MODEL SEEMS TO BE PICKING THIS UP THE BEST...BUT EVEN IT MAY BE UNDERDONE. WE ARE GOING WITH 2 TO 5 INCHES FROM BOSTON ONTO THE NORTH SHORE. WITH TEMPERATURES IN THE MID TO UPPER 20S IT WILL STICK ON UNTREATED ROADWAYS...SO HAVE DECIDED TO HOIST A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IN THIS REGION. ALSO EXPANDED WINTER WEATHER ADVISORIES FOR THE REST OF BRISTOL AND INTO NORFOLK COUNTY BASED ON RADAR TRENDS.-- End Changed Discussion --
