Classic EC, LOL. I think they need new equipment and new employees. They've been awful in the past few years and have lost alot of credibility.

The only explanation I can come up with is that they only think the blowing snow will be a problem in open areas. Toronto is really the only forecast zone that doesn't have any of that.

Was thinking its a forecaster error for a moment, since the Special Weather Statements aren't issued using a graphical interface at EC, while all the other bulletin types are. But your reasoning may be correct.

EDIT: Makes sense considering all forecast zones expect Toronto have local blowing snow in their forecasts as well.

Up in my area no LES, lol. Just some mood flakes. :( How boring!

This is easily better then Fridays event in my region. some good snow right now and roads were quickly becoming a mess on my drive down from square one.

I was up at Markham Road and Major Mackenzie and the snow was really intense as I drove home. Briefly drove north of Major Mackenzie into a rural area and snapped a few pictures. This more than makes up for yesterday's let down!

Temperature data for downtown is now reported under the "Toronto City" station. Still at the U of T. I think they changed the location of the equipment just slightly which necessitated a new site ID.

Thanks for this. I always thought that was the Island airport station which I'm guessing, in actual fact, is Toronto City Centre?

EC radar is usually 10-20 minutes behind real time OBS unfortunately as it updates slowly.

I understand. Actually, at wunderground it updates no later than 2 minutes after the observed sweep.

But it any case, it had nothing to do with that. SN/800m visibility was well ahead of the heavy "comma head" returns.

If you have a source for the raw EC radar data such as radar scope, the delay is less than on the EC website. However, since the radars are C band, it requires 2 - 5 minute scans to get both velocity and reflectivity data in the three-dimensions. This is one source for the larger delays. Also, radar attenuation may be a reason for the decent returns but less than impressive snows at the ground...behind the initial moderate or heavy snow, although attenuation is weakening of the radar beam...so don't quote me on that.

interesting, thanks. I normally find EC's radars to reflect ground truth pretty well. I noticed that when the snow lightened, the flakes got larger. Maybe the enhanced returns were reflecting the size of the flakes rather than the intensity of the rate of fall.

Scarborough's in what looks like a nice lake induced convergence zone. Enjoy.

How much has fallen?

Haven't measured yet. Might go out once it stops. Looks like about 5cm.

6.8cm down here. Could hit 10cm if the cold front overperforms. I'll take that easily.

More snow is expected after midnight, right? Arctic front?

Wish we had access to WKR's dual-pol data. EC raw radar is actually quite high resolution. Somewhere in between the resolution of Level 3 and Level 2 from the NWS. Closer to Level 2 though.
