I agree with the your comment regarding river ice...doesn't make sense. On the other hand, I think the term 'black ice' is fairly legit for ice glazed on asphalt  since it appears 'black' and recognized publically as such. JMHO

I think the term is used because it is ice that is very hard to see with the naked eye, particularly under grey skies or at night. Some ice you can see very clearly when approaching from a distance. With black ice, it looks like dry pavement until you're right on top of it.

Definitely looks like an exciting time for this forum. There are several chances of decent shots at snow. From Rochester to Syracuse to Watertown might have feet of snow in the next 2 weeks. If only the glaciers carved out Lake Erie to be a tad deeper. ^_^

.CLIMATE...

UP TO THIS POINT...ITS BEEN A MEMORABLY COLD WINTER.

TEMPERATURES FOR EACH OF THE FIRST THREE MONTHS OF THIS WINTER

(NOVEMBER THROUGH TODAY) HAVE AVERAGED BELOW NORMAL FOR THE FIRST

TIME IN OVER 30 YEARS.

THE MOST IMPRESSIVE NUMBERS ARE BEING FOUND AT BUFFALO. TEMPERATURES

AT THE BUFFALO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT HAVE AVERAGED AT LEAST 2 DEGREES

F BELOW NORMAL FOR EACH WINTER MONTH THUS FAR (-3.1 NOV...-2.1 DEC

AND SO FAR FOR THIS MONTH...-3.4 DEG F). THE LAST TIME MERCURY

LEVELS WERE THIS COLD FOR THE FIRST THREE MONTHS OF WINTER WAS

DURING THE INFAMOUS WINTER OF 1976-77...WHEN TEMPERATURES AVERAGED

AT LEAST 5.5 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL FOR THE SAME CALENDAR PERIOD.

IN ROCHESTER...WHILE TEMPERATURES HAVE AVERAGED BELOW NORMAL FOR THE

FIRST THREE MONTHS OF THIS WINTER...THE DEPARTURES HAVE NOT BEEN

QUITE AS SIGNIFICANT. NEVERTHELESS...THIS HAS NOT OCCURRED SINCE THE

WINTER OF 1980-81.

Honestly, this is what I like about the NWS down there. On the surface of things, this won't be a big snow event, but the winds accompanying the snow will make it a potentially severe event, nonetheless. I think Environment Canada up here should issue more public advisories, even if less than 6" of snow is expected.

I'm hoping for 2-4" out of this first system.

Calling for 8-10 for my area with 20-30 mph winds and gust up to 45 Yikes. Some Lake Effect Saturday night into Sunday morning. Plus another storm rolling in Monday damn.

Wow, you live close to Oswego? You must get pounded by snow in the winter!

It's too bad we don't have a board member who lives in Watertown, the ice-box of the eastern USA.

I'm 10 minutes from Oswego... in a normal winter the snow piles up pretty good, last night we picked up about 6" of LES. it gets crazy here when the LES gets kicked up really good. It's been cold here also but not like Watertown. Couple days ago it got down to -16 brrrrr lol. I love living near that big pond they call Lake Ontario haha.

Check out this cool video on how they use to plow snow back in the old days over the Tug hill region.

I saw that near the time when you posted this, it was under a related video from a previous snow video uploaded and posted in this sub-forum. I had no idea footage like that was out there. It was almost destroyed in the late 70s as well. Just insane stuff and being in colour being the 1930s is so awesome, you would never think something like snow-plowing would have that back then.

More BS sensationalism, but whatever keeps people off the roads.

It's too bad there is no footage of when they borrowed the 12 foot rotary runway plow from the then Griffiss Air Force Base to clear snow on Rt.26 across the Tug..

They still plow with them up there in spots.... It was probably about 10 yrs ago snowmobiling and I think it was somewhere around Montague when we came over a hill and saw one coming down the road at all us.... Eeek!

Nice historical video of plowing.  I noticed that at 2:23, it showed a photo labeled Town of Pompey, Onondaga County, that's southern part of the county, not on the Tug.   That's a lot of packed and drifted snow....most towns around here still have the old wing-tip plows, but usually painted and parked outside Town garages as decorations.
