They're down to -31F/-35C now. Wonder if they'll make 40 below on both temperature scales tonight? Pretty incredible. For cities, perhaps Watertown should be called the "icebox of eastern America".

I agree. I suspect some places in the Adirondacks get 10-15 degrees colder than Watertown, but definitely agree for cities.

Strong wording out of Buffalo for weekend clipper.

A POWERFUL STORM WILL THEN DEVELOP OVER THE UPPER GREAT LAKES LATE
FRIDAY NIGHT...AND AS THIS DEEPENING STORM CROSSES TO OUR NORTH ON
SATURDAY...IT WILL SWING ANOTHER ARCTIC COLD FRONT ACROSS OUR
REGION. STRONG WINDS WILL ACCOMPANY THE PASSAGE OF THIS LARGE
STORM SYSTEM...WITH WINDS OF 30 TO 50 MPH AND WIDESPREAD SNOW
POSSIBLY PRODUCING BLIZZARD CONDITIONS LATE FRIDAY NIGHT AND
SATURDAY MORNING.

Low shear, good moisture could lead to big totals with lake effect.

keep an eye on Saturday for an unexpected blizzard with 50- 60 mph winds for us

thank you

SNOW SHOWERS WILL BREAK OUT AHEAD OF THE APPROACHING ARCTIC FRONT...

AND PENDING THE SPEED OF THE FRONT...THERE COULD BE A PERIOD WHERE

BLIZZARD CONDITIONS WILL BE IN PLACE OVER THE WESTERN COUNTIES.

SINCE THERE IS STILL TOO MUCH UNCERTAINTY AS TO THE AMOUNT OF

WIND...AND IT DOES NOT APPEAR THAT WE WILL GET ENOUGH SNOW TO

WARRANT A WINTER STORM WATCH...WILL JUST ADDRESS THE OVERALL

SCENARIO IN THE HWO...INCLUDING THE POTENTIAL FOR NEAR BLIZZARD

CONDITIONS.

THE DEEPENING SFC LOW WILL LIFT TO SOUTHERN QUEBEC ON SATURDAY WHILE

SWEEPING ITS STRONG COLD FRONTAL BOUNDARY OVER OUR FORECAST AREA. IT

WILL NOT BE THE DAY TO TRAVEL ACROSS THE REGION AS STRONG WINDS AND

WIDESPREAD SNOW SHOWERS WILL BE COMMON. STAY TUNED TO POSSIBLE

WINTER STORM OR HIGH WIND WATCHES IN UPCOMING PACKAGES.

Just a general question for upstaters. Why is Watertown often so bitterly cold, compared to places around it? Often it is even colder than Ottawa, a two hour drive north. As I type it is already fifteen below in the city. Does the Watertown/Fort Drum/ Gouverneur area get a lot of radiational cooling due to its topography?

If you like seasonal extremes, Watertown sounds like the city to be in the eastern US. Tonnes of snow, bitter cold as well as very hot temperatures in the summer. I was there for the Sacket's Harbor War of 1812 weekend in early August 2012 and it got up to the mid 90s.

http://www.abay.com/alexandriabaynynews2968.htm   walking on black ice N/W of watertown..

clayton N.Y on the St. Lawrence river

Why in the world would anyone refer to that as black ice, it's just plain old ice.  In fact, that idiotic term has angered me for years.  Ice isnt black, it's just ice.  -end rant-

That said, pretty cool video.

I agree with the your comment regarding river ice...doesn't make sense. On the other hand, I think the term 'black ice' is fairly legit for ice glazed on asphalt  since it appears 'black' and recognized publically as such. JMHO
