Got down to 8 here. Lack of thicker snowcover probably kept us from radiating like mad.

Got a text from my Dad up in South Jersey - Millville was at -6 this morning, which was the fourth below-zero reading this month. That's just wild. They've been really snowy and really cold this year (especially January).

Hit -4.6 here this am, currently -3.2. BIG inversion, it is +16 up at airport (KHSP) and +14 at Snowshoe. It was -11 in Lewisburg, WV last hour.

BTW I had snow this morning.....from the paper mill 4 miles away. Should I report that to CoCoRaHS?

I now have had 5 days below zero and 13 in single digits. Running -8 degrees below normal for month.

We got down to +1F here in Cape May.  Millville Airport radiates like no other.  They are often the coldest spot in the state when conditions are radiational rather than advective.

OXB was -9°. That set a new all-time record low.

Yep.

... Lowest temperatures in several years across the area...

Ideal radiation cooling combined with a significant snow cover

allowed temperatures to drop to their lowest levels in many years.

Some rural areas of inland Virginia and the lower Maryland Eastern

Shore experienced below zero readings.

The following is a preliminary list of low temperatures compared

with previous records.

Station temperature previous record coldest since

Salisbury -6 (record) -4 in 1940 -6 on Jan 28 1987

Norfolk 6 (record) 10 in 1934 5 on Jan 19 1994

Elizabeth City 7 (record) 9 in 1934 7 on Jan 11 1982

*wallops island 3 (record) 13 in 1986 3 on Jan 18 2003

Richmond 4 (no record) -3 in 1940 4 on Jan 17 2009

The following have period of records that are too short for

meaningful daily records... so comparison is made to all time records

Station temperature records began previous all time low

Newport News 1 (record) 2000 9 on Jan 28 2003

Wakefield NWS -5 (tied) 1994 -5 on Jan 28 2000

Wakefield -7 (no record) 1983 -8 on Jan 21 1985

*ocean city -9 (record) 1999 2 on Jan 19 2003

*virginia beach -1 (no record) 1945 -3 on Jan 21 1985

* note that Virginia Beach (oceana naval base)... Wallops Island

and Ocean City sites are located about one mile inland.

Another list should be out by noon that will include other

locations.

Amazing to see some of the reports coming from areas that had a couple inches of snowcover.  Just by looking at the temps in this area, the snowcover south and east of here might have accounted for a 6-10 degree or more departure than what it might have been without snowcover.

Yeah...he told me that the NWS supposedly sent a team out a few years ago to check to make sure that the instruments weren't malfunctioning since they're often by far the lowest temps in the area on nights with good radiational cooling.  He also said that the contractor who built their house a few years ago told him it got down to -11F one night on their on-site temperature-monitoring system during construction.

At least.. plus new snowcover > old snowcover it seems. IAD had a relatively warm low considering.
