January 2014 Pattern Discussion Part II

There were some pretty dry ones back then

The obscene glut of KU-esque storms in recent years has spoiled many. Winters like this one were quite a bit more common before the 1990s. Cold and more nickle/dime snow events rather than the big KUs.

I was doing a lot of ice fishing back then, Access to the lakes were fairly easy by vehicle with the lack of snow and plenty of ice to support the weight of vehicles

Ok, compare theirs to Alaska's...what is your point??

Someone always has it worse.

I was just joking with him.

Because they are agreeing with you but you are AOA climo snow wise, they are solidly below. You have had an ok winter but less so vs areas south. You've had snow otg most of the time since 12/15. You're below normal in temperatures. I don't know.,,,maybe having each other around is a bad thing, When I was a kid, I could care less of someone had a big jackpot near me because I had no school and I was spending the day sledding.

It's the weenie mentality. It's not what you've had, it's what you could have had.

No, its been a decent winter.

That last event was just very frustrating, but moving along...

Feb looks decent.

Ray is really only about the larger events. If they are mostly nickle and dimes, then its no surprise he'd feel a lot more down on the winter than someone else who has had similar amounts. He's been like that for years on here.

Some like the cold and smaller stuff more than others. Everyone's got their own flavors. Some people actually complained about last winter because despite all the snow, it wasn't that cold.

the euro ens mean keeps getting warmer for 2/4

Yeah...and d10 timing differences wash out the peak warmth in the mean, but there's many members that transition to rainers. There's a hint of secondary redevelopment in the GOME on the mean. No need to discuss details at this point though.

I understand what you're saying, but missing a major event by 20 miles in the midst of a period otherwise characterized by oscillating shots of cold/dry and cutters was much less than desirable.

I carried on too long, agreed....but I'd have rather had no shot, than missed that closely.

Yeah this last weeks event was frustrating particularly for you but mby got into the band for a few hours so we ended up with a modest event that had no business closing schools...lol. 5 miles south of me had 12+.

February looks cold enough for snow with many more chances.

I get Ray's point, when miles away gets a foot and you have a 3 dendrites stacked up to give you an inch...it's frustrating. I have and will have the same feeling at some point...might even be this winter.  But , that's the way it goes sometimes. It comes down to luck. I remember asking myself how can I be so unlucky in Jan 2003, but then Feb 2003 came. Same deal last year. After getting screwed to the point it seemed like the weenie Gods were out to get me, the blizzard happened. Many times, it changes on a dime. Hopefully we all have more fun this winter.

Yes, I complain too much.

No argument, but the frustration was warranted.

Perfect example of that here is i have a little over 37.40" so far and john (Mainephotog) who is 20 miles to my SE has over 49.50" and he is just inland from the coast, So as i said earlier, I have had some bad luck from some of these systems

Some stay inside and marvel at winter. Others go out and embrace it.

Pics taken today on a classic winter day..deep deep winter...temps in the teens late morning.

Look at that blond beauty!  Mine does the same move on top of snow.  Snow is best with a dog.  Took a walk up an open field/hill during the burst of moderate yesterday afternoon.  Felt like it had been snowing all day what with all the pack.  The dog was crazy with weenie joy.  Deep deep continues.  You need to start a thread again soon.

I'm still hopeful for the weekend.
