January 2014 Pattern Discussion Part II

Typhoon Tip

Philly is having an incredible run. They probably will double their snow climo. BOS is 0.4 less even though climo is much higher.

But we're in that type of setup. I agree on the torches and likely won't snow like that but we're doing some solid cold that's growing biceps!

wait until 2014 walks in the door, years ending in 4 FTW

The composite mean of the 12z Euro ensemble analogs suggests an anomalously tight 850 mb temperature gradient over the central US. This is supported by the presence of a trough over the southwest and a weak ridge downstream. That could be a favorable pattern going forward with several moderate snow events (at least for the interior NE) within 5 days of those analogs.

I've only got like 7 more inches than Philly (33" vs 40") on the season, on January 23rd.  I think its safe to say that hasn't happened before...northern VT mountain communities running in the same league as Philly at the end of January.

Lets hope we never see something like this again, lol.  Although its gotta be pretty sweet for the I-95 weenies.

meh, BWI is 12.2" and DCA around half of that

starting in 09/10, PHL can do no wrong and probably has double snowfall of BWI since and including our epic winter of 09/10

pretty unbelievable considering their average was maybe 2" more than BWI before 09/10

and as bad as this winter has been for you guys relatively speaking, trust me when I say it's worse for us in the DCA/BWI area when PHL is just a 80-90 minutes drive up I95

You forgot last winter where they got screwed. I think they got like 8 inches while just northeast of them did at least average or better. NYC got like 26" and SNE got totally buried. They snuck into the good snows in 2010-2011 but last year were left out.

They've had a horseshoe this year though.

No that is a clipper going well NW of us...middle of next week...like Wed/Thu there could be a coastal offshore close enough to "scrape" us. 12z OP Euro showed it close enough for SE areas for a light to moderate snow.

Will, is Amherst, NH to far south for this clipper?  That would be ironic since we had nothing from this last clipper being to far North.  Just curious if we are then going to be shut out again for the next storm next week being again to far north due to the very cold artic air blocking us.
