Mornings like today remind me of winters from being a kid.  Snow cover and cold.  Pretty awesome.

.

This stretch of weather had me thinking the same thing. I'm a 70's kids and remember many cold, snowing mornings waiting for my school bus.

When I was a child, I remember everyone would go ice skating on the community pond every year. I was so looking forward to go and ice skate on it as I was just a little one but it hasn't frozen over since those days in the late 70s early 80s. I'm curious if it has now. Might have to do a drive by later on today...

It's funny how so many of us from that era have the same memory.  We had a community pond too, that also froze over just about every year.  Our parents would drop us off and then pick us up later, and without cell phones, it was always an event trying to round up all of us kids when mom came back to get us.

Soo... now even ESPN is covering the polar vortex...they somehow managed to work it in to the college basketball pregame a few mins ago. No kidding a weather map and everything. Reece Davis was playing weatherman, and I gotta say I am shocked how well he described what the PV actually is. Kicked Al Roker's lame ass with that cold air hurricane BS.

My heating guy told me that most people don't realize (me included until he told me) the aux heat comes on under 40 or 50 (can't remember) but b/c there are 3 rows of heating elements, people just think they come on when the air gets real hot (that's when all 3 kick in.) Hence, I don't bother worrying about it any more. It'll be another killer bill this month. Last month was the highest one we ever received and I've been in this house almost 25 yrs. But I bought it new and while under construction, I sorta knew the builder and was friends with the agent and asked if I could go in during construction and insulate hot water pipes and a/c ducts and did, so that has helped as neighbors with a little smaller models have historically had higher electric bills.

Regardless, aux heat will come on will after a predetermined time once the coil has reached 32 degrees as a result of the setting on the defrost board in your outside unit. There is no way to avoid this. The settings are usually 30, 60, 90 minutes.

A heat pump is essentially a Air Conditioner with a reversing valve. It extracts heat from the outside air and moves it via the refrigerant to the coil in your indoor air handler where a fan blows across another coil and then heat is redistributed throughout the house via duct work. When in defrost mode the outdoor unit is actually in Air conditioning mode. The electric heating elements are needed to reheat the air conditioned cold air.

If you have ever seen a heat pump that looks like a block of ice it is likely the defrost board has failed to function properly.

Also if you increase the temperature on the indoor thermostat by 3 degrees (typically) above the ambient indoor temperature, the aux heat will come on instantly. Obviously the colder it is outside the harder it is for the outdoor unit to extract heat from the air. As a result the unit will run for a longer period time. As the unit runs and is not able to provide an ample amount of heat, the inside temp begins to drop. The drop in temp without satisfying the stat is another reason the aux heat will come on. Which would essentially be the same as trying to increase the thermostat setting by 3 degrees at once.

Heat pumps work most efficiently in the 40-50 degree range. That's because there is more heat to extract from the outside air. Air condition is actually extracting the heat from inside and moving outside. That's why you'll feel hot air blowing off the outside unit's fan when it is on. You refrigerator works the same way. Ever notice the hot air blowing out from beneath a refrigerator?

I've probably strayed a little off topic, but I find it interesting.

Additionally, I think a lot people may think A/C makes cold air...when that is not the case.

Which is exactly the reason I position an electric oil filled radiator over the heating vent in the living-room and another next to the HVAC unit in the unfinished basement.  (both are usually set on the 600W setting. Although during the severe cold snaps, I'll bump one to 900W)

As soon as the outside temp gets into the 40's, the heaters get turned off. (And the cats get annoyed.)

Yup, none of the local channels have anything.

@HCPDNews: Three people confirmed dead at Columbia Mall. Victims unknown at this time.

Initial reports coming from the mall are saying that at least 3 people are dead, including the shooter. NBC news is reporting that between 1 and 4 people were shot during the situation.

Kinda surprised the local stations haven't broken in on the regular schedule programs.

I went to the river today, was pretty much entirely frozen near memorial bridge save a few spots. I want to walk on it. :( The ice made noises.

Just find a dumb kid. And tie a rope to him. I skated a pond yesterday evening. Very safe but shallow with no river current. Some kids broomed the snow off recently so it was pretty smooth.

Potomac should be safe in 3 days for at least 50 yards from shore. Center channel will always be suspect. Just do a couple shots of vodka and take a step or 2. 3" of ice is no worries
