January school closings may lead to makeup days in June

Article by: KIM MCGUIRE , Star Tribune Updated: January 23, 2014 - 10:00 PM

Cold-related school closings have districts checking their calendars to make sure they’ll meet the state-required 170-day minimum.

I know Baltimore City schools are closing more often than they did 20 years ago when I was going. I can remember hearing the list of schools closed (which was pretty much the entire state), then hear the announcer say "But Baltimore City schools are STILL OPEN".

My 11th grade History teacher said at the apocalypse, you'd hear the news the world was ending and the tag line "But Baltimore City schools are STILL OPEN"

In all honesty I don't really care one way or the other...certainly all kids safety is paramount but in the end they will all get their education for the year. It's a disruption and reality is that it's a headache for the parents and that's why it's as big of a hot button as it is. The toughness argument is laughable at best to me....but anyway...it does make for good conversation....and bare cabinets with two teenagers in the house. :)

Now there's a good reason for living in Minnesota!

Yeah, MN always had one of the lower required number of school days.  We started the day after Labor Day and ended the first week of June.

you ever notice, its always "they" can't drive, "people" are idiots.  No matter who you're talking to, everybody says the same thing.  So, who are "they", where are these "people"?

too many people in one room can make anyone crazy.  it's the thing i like least about this region...it's just too crowded, and getting even more crowded with all the government spending.  same reason i was only able to live in manhattan for 10 months before i peace'd out.

That is because they did not have enough kids to make it to the end of the year. Most of the kids died of frostbite in the winter.

I'll get some pics for ya Bob. And I'll try to measure. Never done that, kewl...tomorrow is doable.

I've been in a daze - had to have my kitty put to sleep Monday evening. She was a total sweetheart and my buddy for 14 years. The storm the next day was perfect...as was the work closure...and going through it with you weenies was great distraction. So thanks y'all, especially for the laughs.

Sorry for loss Kay.  You're now the third who has spent a snow day grieving this season (that I know of.)

Our first big snow on Dec. 8th was my day to stare out at the falling snow, cry, and yes, find a surprising number laughs in the banter and storm threads. It's nice how complete strangers can ease the pain, many without even realizing they're doing so.

Hang in there, and once again, my condolences on the loss of your unconditionally loving companion.

(((hugs)))

Banter around here can really help on those kind of days. Maybe that is why MA is a cut above the rest.

i only have a degree in math and i only know a little more than the average joe regarding the weather, which means i don't have a clue what i'm talking about regarding medium to long range weather patterns, but i know this...

for the last few months it seems like we've gone cold, brief warm up, colder.  i'm a fan of patterns and would be pretty surprised if we don't score a MECS out of this winter at dca.  not a hecs, but a legitimate 5"+ snowfall for dc folks.  cold is harder to get around this area than qpf.  at some point, i think a southern wave falls victim to this airmass imo.
