He (Jason) probably should have steered clear of the editorializing.   Not saying he is right or wrong, but man...what a topic to go off on.

He knows what he is doing... tho I wonder if stuff like that pisses some people off to not returning.  I guess it doesn't matter. I love mets but many too often reach outside their expertise. I swear if I wanted a bridge built a met would have the best idea how to do it.

As someone who got into with CWG and, interestingly, Ellinwood on twitter about the FCPS closing (which is silly because I live in MD and don't really care), it's worth adding that my main concerns centered around the insistence that this is a matter of "toughness", a framing that belies the complexity of the situation. Risk assessments and decisions of this scale are really complicated, and what I love about CWG as a forecasting outlet is its embrace of complexity. To see Jason reduce all the factors that go into a school system's decision to open or close based on us being "wimps" is really disappointing.

Also, as others have said, the comparisons to other regions are ridiculous and wrong. And the idea that we need to practice driving in snow more is probably true, but we can't control those opportunities (as much as those of us here would like).

I'm (now) a good driver in the snow and I have a Subaru. It takes a lot to keep me in during bad weather, but my fears are not based on my abilities but the abilities of those around me. I was also fortunate to have had one minor accident and one could've-been-major accident in snowy conditions (the latter involving a semi-truck that I almost slid under at highway speeds) that provided me fantastic opportunities to learn about driving in the snow. This is not a realistically replicable educational experience. I hope to impart some of this wisdom with my kids as they become drivers, and as I noted to Ellinwood on twitter, I hope to use future snow days to get them to practice in safe and relatively controlled environments. But I won't be able to offer them that practice if we all toughen up and just go to school/work, weather be damned.

I took my son up to the airport on his third driving lesson (it is a not well traveled road) and 'turned him loose' in 4-7 inches of unscrapped and untraveled snow...why? Because I knew he'd be traveling to Snowshoe as often as possible once he got that license, which he did/does. I let him put car into a slid, made him do some evasive stuff and all the other necessary driving that you need to learn in snow. 6+ years later and hundreds of trips to 'Shoe-no accidents. It should be required in drivers ed to drive in the stuff  (yes I know time and weather are issues with this)  before full license is issued.

Since he decided to wade into it, I am glad that he posted a follow-up post where he acknowledged the tone of the original post was unnecessarily aggressive. I still agree with him-- none of those photos sent in would have resulted in a day off in previous years.

He's right.. I mocked Loudoun for closing the rest of the week on Twitter last night and they have a Friday workday or something. The argument and way it was presented was subpar by CWG standards IMO and not sure it's even really tangentially related enough to go there anyway. But hey if capitalweather is open to be a trolling tool I have some ideas. No doubt if I was in Jason's shoes I'd have made a number of posts I regret later even if they drive traffic etc. He's opinionated like most of us but his long term steady measured stance is what keeps everything humming.. So just a blip probably. And I suppose something may have come from it like us learning the county needs new buses or more bus heaters.

I've never seen such heated debate over school closings. Constant harping here and now a cwg firestorm. Maybe its just me but idgaf about it at all. I fookin loved snow days as a kid. Major fond memories. I hope my kids have as many as possibl.

Earlier on the radio, the host was giving counties a hard time for keeping schools closed this long given that it was really only a moderate event. A teacher (and parent) called in and said she agreed with the decisions because not all sidewalks were cleared and the extreme cold made it unsafe given that kids had to stand on the bus stop.

I'm not entirely sure how the VA counties are handling this, but here in AA Co. there was a 2hr delay today and I saw buses staging down the street prior to pick up time to ensure that kids would have a very limited wait at the stop.

The Bush River (the extent I can see anyway) is completely frozen.

Take some pics tomorrow and post them. I love that stuff. Brings back a round of fond childhood memories. Not sure if you are able but I'm interested in thickness too. And no, please don't walk out on it and chip a hole.

This is two bigger issues that we see related to weather more and more.. Aging infrastructure (including transportation) and less budget allocation. Of course figuring out the numbers and all that stuff is hard and boring.

Then there is the wimp/security culture of the post 9/11 world.

Wait, are we closing and delaying because of the cold or because the roads are still bad in spots?

The roads I've traveled in Frederick Co are mostly snow covered, with exceptions of major highways. So probably 80% of bus roads are snow covered.

Still think school should be in session.

I'll get some pics for ya Bob. And I'll try to measure. Never done that, kewl...tomorrow is doable.

I've been in a daze - had to have my kitty put to sleep Monday evening. She was a total sweetheart and my buddy for 14 years. The storm the next day was perfect...as was the work closure...and going through it with you weenies was great distraction. So thanks y'all, especially for the laughs.

I was surprised by the original article.   I feel for the school administrators.  They're on the firing line no matter what they decide to do about schools.  Jason has been the steady guiding light so I suspect he'll be a little more reticent about writing a similar article in the future though I'm sure it got hits.
