I think Loudon needs to double their plow and salt truck inventory from 4 to 8.

Not to sound like some old "back in my day" guy (because I'm relatively young and hate when people say stuff like that, lol) but how on earth does Fairfax close 3 days in a row for a 5-7" storm? Places that on average received more snow -- Howard, Frederick, Carroll, Montgomery, etc. all managed to have delayed openings and not close for another day.

Pretty sure Loudoun was closed a few weeks ago on a Monday when it was 44 and raining.

Granted I could just be talking out of my ass, because I don't know all that's required to safely clear sidewalks/schools/etc. And with all this said, obviously safety is and should be the number 1 priority...if you need to extend the school year, big deal. But it just seems like a bit much in this case...especially Fairfax (I know western Loudoun has tricky terrain that makes things even more difficult than say, Leesburg and the eastern part of the county).

In MoCo I was noticing the side streets were still covered yesterday. I'm wondering if the highway dept. was holding back on salting these streets heavily until the temps were closer to 20 degrees. I'm thinking they might be trying to conserve resources a bit considering we still have quite a bit of winter ahead of us...of course this all speculation.

I hope none of the hunters on the board know your address :) That's a nice 8 point. We had a bunch of does huddled up behind our house yesterday looking for food.

I would gladly allow them to bow hunt and set up a tree stand. Too bad we don't have PA deer laws. They're a nuisance around here. My area is developed neighborhood everywhere...with one exception...rock creek park and the feeder streams. I live right by sycamore creek which connects to rock creek park. They use it as a highway. I had to cut down an apple tree to help keep them from gathering in my yard day in day out. My back yard was covered with deer marbles for years before I cut the tree down.

Welcome home....you missed a fun storm!

It was 32 and windy as hell yesterday morning on Hilton Head, so I didn't mind coming back to 3 and no wind.  Plus, neighborhood friends of ours used their snowblower to clear our sidewalk and driveway while were gone, so I was in a much better mood then I might have otherwise been when we pulled into the driveway last night!

You took the page right out of my book.  Well done!

95 from about the VA/NC border looked like it had snow on it yesterday.  But it was salt.  Thick, thick salt.  Digusting.

Secondary roads and some side streets in my area aren't much better.

Sounds like the creeks and parks around me, but they do allow bow hunting in resdential areas here (or at least they did as of about a year ago).  I often see guys setting up shop along the open area under high tension wires in Accotink Park near Braddock Road.  Tons and tons of deer around there/here.

Would take you up on that if your property was big enough. Just have to be 50 yards from the adjoining houses. I hunt a property in Howard county that's less than an acre. But the closest houses are 75 yards away. We have such a problem with ornamental plant damage that a large portion of my business includes treating plants with deer repellent.

Edit*** looks like moco states you must be 150 yards from a building to bow hunt inside the urban zone. That's doesn't make much sense.

I deleted the comment. The article is fine just not sure it's the weatherman domain http://m.washingtonpost.com/blogs/capital-weather-gang/wp/2014/01/23/time-for-fairfax-county-to-toughen-up/

I've always personally found the comparisons to other areas silly. It's like if it snowed a foot in Phoenix people would be like to you guys are lol compared to Boston.

I forgot VA is like MD and has county/city based SDs rather than smaller individual districts, so yeah, it probably is easier to just shut it all down rather than individual attendance boundaries. PA is different in that they have smaller districts....southern york, southeastern york, western, etc.

Crappy cell pics but I found these dudes hanging out in mine and my neighbor's back yards. My dog ran off a half dozen first thing this morning but the big bucks came right back to take a nap. If the bucks were smarter they would run my dog off.

I've got a bunch in my back woods doing the exact same thing.  Each morning I find new track in the snow and note places where they have been pawing to get to ivy along the side yard.  They've already gotten all the ivy in back.

The question to me is.......is our children learning....is they!!!!

More importantly.. how much do the parents want to kick their children out the door at this point.

When we thaw the plumbers are next to be slammed. Those bastards have got it coming.

I think the article is fine in the message, but I'm not sure I agree with calling out one school system. There are even more egregious examples of closings south of Fairfax County today...

I honestly don't care about school closings at all.  The piece is a bit odd IMO but it is a big traffic draw and has lots of interesting commentary.  I am rather opinionated myself so I'd probably do things like that from time to time in Jason's shoes. It just sorta looks like it was a spur of the moment thing done in 10 minutes.

My limited drive around the Mt. Vernon area this morning had plenty of streets that were as bare as bare can be.  Some were still snow packed but had sand laid down and were passable.  Sidewalks seemed ok.

There was no way we had off two days let alone 3 for a 4" storm when i was a kid going to Fx Co schools

First it's us firemen....we had over 25 broken pipes in 24 hrs 2 weeks ago. And that was just in my response area. People expect us to stay and fix the pipes! Haha...nope.

One of the comments in that article states that there are 40K students in the county that walk 1 to 1.5 miles to school. I find that hard to believe. I'm also wondering why counties don't close based on district. This is done in PA and it works very well.

We closed by city/town/township (for public schools) and by school (for parochial shools) in South Jersey when I was in grade school and high school in the 80s and 90s.

5-7" county-wide in Fairfax County simply doesn't warrant three days of closure.  I can't see how anyone can make a straight-faced argument to the contrary.
