January Banter Banter Thread Part2

I was working north of Boston for their own version of the 1/11 storm, and it was absolutely ridiculous. They let everyone leave at around 1:00, and within 30 minutes the area had ground to a standstill.

The telework option is a great one. Maybe my take is biased because I can and do telework when the situation calls for it, but the government, writ large, should be able to provide their employees with the means to telework in these situations (unless you're working classified or something).

Yeah, my division (in the NWS) has an optional telework clause for bad weather situations.  I think teleworking varies by agency.  So on "optional leave/telework" days you can do either.  Since schools are almost always closed in those cases, I just take the unscheduled leave anyhow (daughter would be home, not easy to do real work).  Heck, I'd take the option for leave regardless just to enjoy the storm!  Of course, when the Gov't is closed, that's all a moot point.

And rightly so, as far as I'm concerned!  That was an unmitigated disaster of a commute, pushing everyone out onto the roads right when the heavy snow started.  Today, the heaviest snow is expected during the afternoon into the evening...if they did an early release, it could well be a similar disaster.  And the temperatures are significantly colder than Commutageddon was.  Same for school closings, I don't blame them, it would be a nightmare getting buses out on the roads in significant snow like that.

Liberal leave isn't bad, but if you don't have the leave time that could be a problem.  I know the Feds in a lot of departments do allow optional telework, which helps.

Yeah, I was in the office that day and was going to leave at 3.  When I heard the government was closing at 3, I left at 2.  I'm a lawyer in private practice, so I can generally telework at my discretion. (I had to go in today for a meeting, however.) My neighbors who didn't leave early didn't get home until close to midnight and we're inside the beltway by some distance.

I was thinking more early dismissal for schools.  My kid usually leaves for school at 8:20.  If they closed after lunch, she would have gotten a few hours in and still been able to play in the snow this afternoon.

I get the idea, but many of the folks commute back and forth to the area on a daily basis for work. Anyone in southern york or adams county (or in the case of fozz/meddler that has a home here but is at school) should feel welcome to share their obs. Certainly don't need people telling folks to get the f out and go away. Childish. The CPA forum welcomes northern MDers with open arms.

well in Matts defense, I totally understand. Technically they belong in the CPA forum, not here.

Lived here since August 2009 and still have not gotten used to nor trust the process of the coastal talking over and rates picking up in response . I know that it can and does , but it always feels like it is not going to in time. I remember the despair before the feb 10 storm exploded in 2010 .

Hope Mitch , Bob and others are right about the coastal taking over this time too.
