Hailstorm
Only reason that anyone`s allowed to hate winter Eh, I think women still look very attractive in winter clothing and outerwear. But that's just me.
doncat
Back below freezing here, so went above 32 for less than seven hours today... won't get above freezing again till probably Friday, so seven hours above 32 in about 11 days is pretty impressive. pazzo83
Park hit freezing at 4pm ob. Down, down we go. Lows now forecast in the mid teens though, not that extraordinary. Seems like this shot is directed more towards the SE. Back home they are supposed to get a good deal below 0 tonight.

tdp146
Shot of the great south bay this afternoon looking south from Sayville. You can see the Robert Moses tower in the background. Should get even more solid by Friday morning
tdp146
Thought this was pretty cool too. This is a pile of ice that accumulated over the past few days because of the tides forcing chunks up over the bulkhead.
TWCCraig
Nice pics! Interesting to see the GSB like that. The GSB has frozen over on 3 separate occasions this winter.

I would think that's the result of the strong sw wind Saturday morning. This week should have the best ice on area waters since

doncat
Another lmpressive cold day here, looks like 20 will do it for high...clear sky and light winds tonight mean single digits. Come friday's above freezing temps my station was above freezing for seven hours during an eleven day period.
LongBeachSurfFreak
Took a ride to check the ice and there was basically nothing on the western bays! Surprising as I thought it would maxing out. I guess you really need single digits

uncle W
yesterday and today had a top five lowest max temperature for KNYC...21 and 23 max...analogs suggest February will average out at least 3.5 degrees milder with no more single digit temperatures...these analogs are 1957, 1965, 1982 and 2009...There are many other examples of a cold January and milder February...1994 and 1968 were two years with January and February both cold...I would like to think 1994 will be the best analog but I have my doubts with that one...JB's 1917-18 analog had a February that was 10 degrees milder than January...January 2014 will end up averaging around 28.5...On par with 1957, 1965 and 2009...1982 was a little colder...February was near or above average for these years...snowfall was less than January on average... pazzo83
Yup posted last night in the mid Atlantic thread what might be a tie for the all time record low of -6 for Ocean City, Md Looks like they blew past that all-time record: ----------------------------------------- ... Lowest temperatures in several years across the area... Ideal radiation cooling combined with a significant snow cover allowed temperatures to drop to their lowest levels in many years. Some rural areas of inland Virginia and the lower Maryland Eastern Shore experienced below zero readings. The following is a preliminary list of low temperatures compared with previous records. Station temperature previous record coldest since Salisbury -6 (record) -4 in 1940 -6 on Jan 28 1987 Norfolk 6 (record) 10 in 1934 5 on Jan 19 1994 Elizabeth City 7 (record) 9 in 1934 7 on Jan 11 1982 *wallops island 3 (record) 13 in 1986 3 on Jan 18 2003 Richmond 4 (no record) -3 in 1940 4 on Jan 17 2009 The following have period of records that are too short for meaningful daily records... so comparison is made to all time records Station temperature records began previous all time low Newport News 1 (record) 2000 9 on Jan 28 2003 Wakefield NWS -5 (tied) 1994 -5 on Jan 28 2000 Wakefield -7 (no record) 1983 -8 on Jan 21 1985 *ocean city -9 (record) 1999 2 on Jan 19 2003 *virginia beach -1 (no record) 1945 -3 on Jan 21 1985 * note that Virginia Beach (oceana naval base)... Wallops Island and Ocean City sites are located about one mile inland. Another list should be out by noon that will include other locations. -------------------------------------- The VA beach reading is extremely impressive as well. Amazing that we can't get below 0F, but places like southeast VA right along the coast can. Shows that this is more about UHI and less about climate change. uncle W
The UHI here in NY has few parallels in the US. DC is probably the closest one. it's not only the large and numerous buildings but also because it's surrounded by water...DC is being built up at a very fast rate...So much so it needs to be avoided when driving to Florida...I95 near Dumfries is almost as bad as the Stateh Island Expressway during rush hour... Yea, taking the 495/95 part of the Beltway from southern MD into Alexandria/Dumfries is basically gridlock all the time.
pazzo83
sandy soils radiate well Yea, but this is still really impressive. -9 in Ocean City is insane. Got down to -17 in the higher elevations of western VA, I kind of figured this cold shot would be hitting the mid-Atlantic the most. It actually got close to 0 in parts of coastal NC, which is crazy.
