There were some ponds on the Oceanside/Baldwin line that we used to skate and ride our bikes on when were kids too. I expect that by tomorrow I'll see some ice use happening in my 'hood. The local ponds are looking ready and the one closest to my house only gets about 5 feet deep so it really should be good.
uncle W
every time we get three or four very cold days ice can be seen on the waters around the city...I even saw ice on the Hudson in February 1973...2004 and 2005 had enough ice to effect ferry boats...I would think by the Super Bowl the icy waters will be in the news... I live right down the block from mill pond currently and grew up there too! Back in the 80s when I was a kid the county used to set up a trailer and rent skates and run the whole show. I was pretty young but I do remember skating on mill pond in 85. The back mill pond still isn't frozen (stream enters in) so we have a ways to go before I would walk across to the island in the middle. By next weekend I'm sure it's a safe bet

Just got hired on the Staten Island ferry with DOT. Ice is intense as of last night around battery park, governors island and again by the kills. First time this week ice made if across the river during slack tide around Chelsea piers on my other boat job.
doncat
How does this compare to other prolonged cold waves? like Jan 2004, Feb 1979 The month will probably finish up slightly warmer than 2004 though not by much and 2 or 3 degrees above feb of 1979. Will see what this current cold wave averages at the end of next week.

masomenos
The 19 from yesterday is definitely suspect when you look at the surrounding stations, but that's really nitpicking when you consider that it was still within a degree or two of all the other stations. IMO this month has been more like a January 2005 on steroids than like the truly bone chilling months of Jan 04 and Jan 94. The amount of 50 degree days definitely takes away from the severity of the cold this month. When I plugged in the forecast temps for the next few days the overall monthly average still falls well outside of the top 10 coldest Januarys--and that's with a few days with forecast temps in the teens. Even when I took out last week's 4 day streak of hitting 50 or higher out of the monthly average, this month still doesn't quite measure up to January 2004. Yup...the 2 halves of Jan 05 were like night and day. Any given January is going to have highs in the 50s, but the thaw this month was a bit too strong to make this January one of the greats. Not only that, but the minimum temps haven't been extremely impressive either...even for areas that radiate much better than NYC. Regardless, though, this month has had some of the most impressive long duration cold we've seen the last 30 years.

The latest models backed off the magnitude of cold for Wednesday and are showing upper single digits for Wednesday so we probably wont be able to dip below 5 degrees this week. It looks like the low for the month of 4 back on the 7th will hold. LOWEST: 4 ON 7 ...NEW YORK CITY...
