xdurango
Frozen lakes = No Lake Effect. Extreme cold would hurt yearly totals for lake effect areas. chietanen
Lake Erie freezing over early combined with a deep snowpack led to the Blizzard of 77 in Buffalo. But obviously that was an extreme winter season. Generally, Buffalo's snowfall is concentrated in December and January, prior to Erie becoming ice covered. SnowGoose69
I think the park is going to need -30 or lower 850s to get it done. That run has DCA, BWI, PHL, and NYC below zero. Last time that happened was 20 years ago in January 1994. There is a reason the streak has lasted 20 years... If NYC does not do it in the next week or two I'll seriously consider they will never do it again there should be two to three decent shots at it. I run along the East river every morning down to about 23rd, so I'm keeping an eye on it to see if it freezes up. I've never seen it in the 4 winters I've lived here. I would say most lakes and ponds in the region will be safe to skate or walk on by the middle of next week

Snowshack
Well we could compromise and call it a 96hr or so streak of 20F or under...looks like the park peaked at 19F but areas in and around the city probably got to 20F.

bluewave
I also wonder how much of the great lakes can freeze up. Apparently they have never completely frozen over. They have a good start though Nice Highway for the cold air It looks like this week is currently in second place for the same week going back to 1981. http://iceweb1.cis.ec.gc.ca/Prod20/page2.xhtml?CanID=11080〈=en

SnowGoose69
Some of the ponds and lakes have to be getting close to skateable...these days nobody will do it anymore but I know back years ago people would skate on Mill Pond in Bellmore and twin lakes in Massapequa all the time. A lot of the ponds in Central Park actually stayed mostly ice-covered through the thaw. They are going to have quite a thick layer of ice by this time next week. Although if you try to take a step on the ice NYPD will probably show up in about 30 seconds.

I live in Massapequa and people skate still skate on Caroons lake. Its man made and pretty shallow. Freezes pretty fast and if you did fall in- it would up to your waist. I bet there will be plenty of people out there tomorrow.
