usedtobe
Nice read Wes. Cold definitely looks like a lock. Skating on ponds kinda cold maybe. It's been a long time since the ponds have frozen solid enough for skating in mby.

Bob Chill
It's been a long time since the ponds have frozen solid enough for skating in mby. I have a rink sized shallow pond hidden back in a nature center really close to home. Of course it's not legal but nobody ever goes back there except illegal skaters. Last time I went was Jan 2010. Ice was 2.5 - 3" but plenty stable. Deepest part is maybe 5' and it's crystal clear in the winter. I hoping to get a chance to sneak back there this month with skates, stick, and puck. usedtobe
Nice discussion, Wes. There's a typo in the header in the Technical Discussion. The last word should be month, not year. Thanks for letting me know. I've notified Jason.

Grothar of Herndon
Thanks for the article. Getting a little snow (or a lot of snow for Ji's sanity) with the cold seems a high probability.
clskinsfan
Glad to have Wes on board for a wintry end to the month. Should make us all feel better.
HighStakes
Nice article. Could be fun times ahead. It would be pretty cool to see some ponds frozen solid for weeks.
das
It's been a long time since the ponds have frozen solid enough for skating in mby. Agree. I used to be able to go skating on the C&O Canal up near Potomac easily 4 out of every 5 years. I've only been able to go twice in the last 8 years. In MoCo, most of the ponds and the Canal upcounty still have some decent ice just below the surface. That will help the refreezing considerably once the cold air arrives if it can survive the tomorrow and Monday torch days...

I could see a miller b as a possibility. Without a block it would crush our hopes.
Harv_poor
Another easy to read and understand article for those of us who love weather but have limited technical knowledge. Much appreciated.
usedtobe
Another easy to read and understand article for those of us who love weather but have limited technical knowledge. Much appreciated. I had quite a few complaints that it was too technical and that readers could not follow the box and whiskers diagram. I'll need to dumb it down next time around.
