Chinook
I have put together a 500mb loop of the January 5 event. The loop covers a few days, so you can see the full evolution of the system. I consider this to be a strong storm amplification, and a version of phasing. The singular surface low pressure went from a weak low (Oklahoma?) to 950mb in northern Quebec. The 500mb cold vortex worked together with the southern vorticity max, which was driving the surface low. http://www.greatlakes.salsite.com/Jan_5_2014_storm_loop.html
