Also....with the 1.4" of snow last evening, DTW is now at 27.8" for January, so we leapfrogged 1999 and now sit at 2nd snowiest January on record, only 1.8" away from the 1978 record. Judging by the extended forecast...I dont want to jinx it...but it appears that 2014 will now be the snowiest January on record for Detroit :)

So ORD didn't have an OBS of 1"+/hr while in the core of the LES band...But now while riding the edge there's a 1"/hr OBS? Interesting.

Would put the event total up in the vicinity of 4.5"

Did you see that clipper on the Euro at hour 144, pressure down to low 980s (Blizzard conditions)  lol...Euro has been very consistent with that clipper.

Band almost looks like it's shutting down before it even gets past downtown...ORD jackpot?

Would be nice to get some ground truth.  It could be ripping in that 15-20 dbz area for all we know.

I can vouch for those ORD obs. Just got back from a vacation to Cabo San Lucas and it was snowing very hard there from when we landed just before midnight to waiting for the shuttle to the parking lot around 1 and finally driving back to Naperville around 120.

Had no way to gage actual rates but it was a solid SN to occasional +SN and the wind and falling snow made for almost blizzard like conditions at times. Also my car had at least 3-4" of new snow on it according to the parking lot shuttle driver. Had probably close to moderate rates on the drive to almost Oak Brook I'd say. The roads were pretty treacherous in spots, hadn't been too many plows out yet.

Usually when it's as cold as it is in Chicago, 15-20 dbz returns are plenty for LES. So I'd have to imagine 1" per hour rates or greater are continuing on the west side of Chicago...and perhaps over 2" per hour in extreme NE Cook County. The last couple of frames suggest perhaps a bit of an uptick. Will certainly be interesting to see the totals in a few hours.

Yes, up near Evanston, that area is where you are going to have your 12"+ totals. The band is going to town there.
