DAFF
The potential drifting in the region is insane. Open areas of the lake Erie blowing on land will burry many coastal areas, fields are snow packed with an icy under layer and the ditches are snow and ice filled. Many are 3/4 full of solid ice from the last system which brought all the rain with the snow. I feel this spring will be one with lots of damage and drainage into the soil will take even longer this season. A friend of mine who had to do some emergency sewer repair told me the frost is almost 20" thick and the hardest he can ever remember. Lets hope when the snow does start to melt it can do so in a controlled manner so flooding is kept to a minimum.

This is the MAX depth map for the U.S. I bet its 3-4 feet right now. Frost is 40 inches in White Lake, over 60 inches in Tipton. I would assume Tipton has more drifting and exposed soil, I know that area well. http://www.crh.noaa.gov/dtx/maps.php
cyclone77
I heard frost is 26" deep here in town from some of the public works guys. With all the snow layering the ground over the past few months I was surprised to hear it got that deep.
hm8
this winter has ruled but it's time to thaw out and get this spring thing going. Biggest of big dog record breaking potential not keeping you going anymore? Still possible, but things are gonna need to get back to hyperactive levels. Geos
I heard frost depth was about 15" here. Constant snow cover has prevented anything deeper, which makes sense. The thing about this winter is that it is too cold to do anything outside most of the time! I like hiking in the winter, but it has been too darn cold for it. This winter has costed me more than any other by far, so that's another reason I'm ready for a change. Anyway, spring will be here soon enough. EURO and GFS say that the EPO is around +1 currently. Supposed to go to +4 - +5.

Yeah, a deep snow cover loses some of its luster if you can't enjoy some nice sunny calm days in the 20s instead of the single digits; the snow cover remains intact but it's decently comfortable outside, a win win as far as I'm concerned. That what I'm used to.... being outside in the 20s. FWIW: the CFS says put away your heavy winter coats. Next 45 days is mostly above normal, except for mid-March. Hoosier
Flooding potential would be epic if we get this snow to go all at once and a rainstorm to accompany it but not sure if that is going to happen. To hell with Spring arriving early. I want to bury the LAF season snowfall record. And Clark is a sad bear. As he should be. I'm with you on this one but looks like we might get over the finish line and then waste time with milder weather.

A couple of ducks on the pond before the mild up. I like our chances of getting to and a bit beyond 60" relatively soon. After that...who knows? michsnowfreak
VERY TRUE!!! I everyone I know who is loving this winter ... you guessed it ... all are winter sports fans. I think this is where you & I are much different than most people on this forum. Once there is snow on the ground I am outside a ton because of winter sports. Snow cover is very important to me. Heck I'll even take that crusty 6" as long as I can ski!!! Yes the bitter cold was a bit painful at times this winter but I still have been out as much as possible. I also have have two trips already planned (mine are ski trip though). I can tell several (most) on this board are winter hermits and I can see why they have 'cabin fever'. They could careless about snow cover and only care about the next storm. It is sad to me since winter activities have sooooo much to offer. Exactly. Im with you 100%..its about the snowcover. But this year its a snowpack thats breaking records for its duration and density. This is NOT normal in fact who knows when we will see it again. We snowcover folks are few and far between in a weather board world of storm junkies, and those junkies often use lines like "snowcover isnt important unless you are protecting a deep pack". Well...this is it!
michsnowfreak
I lived through the 70s (as a kid). Great era to be a kid Yes Josh is referring to the fact that people who talk about past winters tend to pick those extreme (Top 10) winters and act like those were NORMAL winters. Exactly. And Im not berating the winters from the '70s at all...in fact the trio of winters 76-77 77-78 78-79 are unmatched for their overall harshness of snow+cold (heck 78-79 was actually a crappy snow year here...cold was another story tho). Snow-wise we have taken that trio to the woodshed many times this past decade, but not until this year have we had the same time of extreme cold to go WITH the heavy snowfall we had already been seeing in bulk in recent years. 2010-11 was close, but the snow was a bit heavier and the cold a bit less. But THIS year is true late-70s cold with late 2000s snow! So yes...2013-14 is far more harsh than any winter of the 1970s here.

Next 45 days is mostly above normal, except for mid-March. The CFS has been running cold almost every day for March, and the latest CFS weeklies only have 1 week (week 2) as above normal here...with week 3 a battle zone (cold north warm south) and week 1 and 4 cold.
