mcshot
bring on the torch Agree! Our recent fuel oil bill of nearly 1K says we need the "torch" soon to financially survive this winter. Animals are hurting too but predators doing well.

Warm, then cold... http://theweathercentre.blogspot.com/2014/02/arctic-cold-to-abruptly-end-in-mid.html?m=1 I don't know why they didn't included next week in the warm up. If the warm up does span 2 weeks and there is no new snow before the March cool down, then that cold shot could translate into 30s for highs easily. By then I think most of the sub forum averages between 40-50° for highs. WGN graphic including the flooding potential and mid to long range. Ottawa Blizzard
How do you figure? We're killing the nearest competitor by 2.5 degrees. Also...it would have to be a true torch for the 2.5 months of neg. departures to be erased. There's no indications that's on the horizon. What's the nearest competitor? I can't see us overtaking 1993-1994, despite the milder December that year. January was super cold that year.

It looks like the cold could come back for the last week of February, just as it did in 1994. In fact that year the warm up was followed by a snowstorm on the 23rd. Since 93-94 the coldest winter was 95-96. Yeah, you're right. Kind of impressive to think there hasn't been a winter this cold in Toronto since I was in Grade 8. Also, if you go back further, this may be the second coldest winter in over 30 years, perhaps since 1978-79 given February was mild in the 1980-81 winter and December was mild in the 1981-82 winter. Geos
0z GFS the warmest yet for the last half of next week. Has 60s pushing up to I-80 and mid 50s into far N IL and southern MI. Definitely would eat the snow pack alive.

If you ever find the the Mt Geos most of us knew, let him know the 0z GEM is an active/snowy run.

I know...not saying Geos is going to be the next torchartie, but I am seriously getting flashback to the days when torchartie transitioned from a snow weenie who had a snow-making machine in his backyard to someone who despised anything cold or snow and planted palms in his Wisconsin backyard. I miss Mt Geos! And if we are picking apart the longrange GFS, it torches for 2 whole days before the cold returns.
michsnowfreak
Also take a look at this. Here at MPX we are approaching the top 10 for days when readings went below zero. I'm a 57 year old geezer and this is the type of winter I remember. Notice 77-78, 78-79, 83-84, and 81-82. I don't think us geezer's are embellishing anything, our memories are spot on. People remember the most extreme winter (and embellish it still) and claim thats how winters used to always be. Besides, snow-wise we have it much harsher than up your way this year. If snowfall 300% of normal is normal, then I dont know what normal means. This winter will probably be the 2nd snowiest winter on record for Detroit as well as somewhere in the top 10 coldest. Im pouring over individual stats to add lots of data to my records thread.

I'm an old geezer too (56) and I also remember the late '70's early 80's winters. However, I think Josh is referring people who talk about winters in the '50's, 60's, and early 70's. I've heard it too, "Why, this is nothing compared to the winters we used to experience." Yes, yes they are comparable. In fact, they're snowier. I do wish that more people on this board would have gotten to live through the winters you mentioned. They were all just awesome.

Granted I expected some AN days ahead as it is normal in pattern changes to have these swings (just like we had in mid-January). Since we are talking the GFS past 240 hour (which is basically talking in la la land) it also shows well below normal temps a couple days after the AN temps. Geos
I was just saying what it's showing. I'd pay to have a warm up like that and completely thaw out, get rid of the old snow( clean slate), and then have one large storm afterwards. I miss 2007-2008 or 2008-2009 type winter, when you never knew what you were going to get from week to week. This winter has been way too predictable. Forecasting this winter has been a piece of cake. lol

Geos
So you want alternating bare grass to snow? The whole name of the game is snow and we got it, why would I want to melt it off just to get it back again? I'm running out of room to put it is the main reason. During the winter of 2007-2008 it was mild enough my pond stayed open and I dumped some snow in there in February! Also trying to see around some corners is getting difficult while driving. Plus a clean slate and then new snow would change the look of the landscape. Like Snow Freak I like a nice even snow pack, not all the drifting. Anyways... The teleconnections from the GFS look to be the same as yesterday. Still volatility with the AO.

For those who prefer snow or cold, we don't care if we lose snow once in awhile, as long as we get it back fairly soon. I know it's hard for snow cover enthusiasts to understand, but we appreciate the unpredictability of winter for what it is.

Jonger
this winter has ruled but it's time to thaw out and get this spring thing going. The last two winters sucked so bad, snow lovers deserve time. If March 1st could be the start of the spring, I wouldnt complain too much, but it's Feb 10th and my average high is 32℉ still. I have 2 planned snowmobile trips still. 2011-2012 I had to drive 300+ miles to get to snow.... I'm still pissed about that one. I know most here aren't winter sports fans, but as a rule, most people who LOVE winter are.

We have almost 20 inches and 4 inches of water content.... That's like a once per 30 year statistic. If it was 6 inches of crust, yea.... I wouldnt give two craps about it either. I would almost be willing to bet that, 30 years from now, people who are kids today will claim to their kids that this is how winter always was when they were in school. I talked to a few people in Ottawa born in the late 50s and you'd swear that every winter was like 1970-1971 up there. People have done this for time immemorial. Here is a quote from David Ludlum's "Early American Winters: 1821-1870". regarding Illinois' Winter of the Deep Snow in 1830-1831: "The creation and perpetuation of ever-growing tall tales about big snowstorms must be basic in man's psychological make-up since there have been other groups of elderlies who gather annually to discuss the big events of their childhoods: one organization in new York City celebrates the Great march Blizzard of 1888- and in Omaha, Nebraska, others yearly shudder collectively at their memories of the famous January 1888 Blizzard on the Great Plains." Whitelakeroy
I know most here aren't winter sports fans, but as a rule, most people who LOVE winter are. VERY TRUE!!! I everyone I know who is loving this winter ... you guessed it ... all are winter sports fans. I think this is where you & I are much different than most people on this forum. Once there is snow on the ground I am outside a ton because of winter sports. Snow cover is very important to me. Heck I'll even take that crusty 6" as long as I can ski!!! Yes the bitter cold was a bit painful at times this winter but I still have been out as much as possible. I also have have two trips already planned (mine are ski trip though). I can tell several (most) on this board are winter hermits and I can see why they have 'cabin fever'. They could careless about snow cover and only care about the next storm. It is sad to me since winter activities have sooooo much to offer.
