What is up with that blob Juuust South of Rutland, VT? It just sits there and is intensifying even though the storm is constantly moving onward.

Odd.

Bright band. It's on the KALB radar cause at that height the beam is passing through a layer of melting/wet snow and graupel. This usual gives apparent higher reflectivities but it probably isn't any heavier by the time it makes it to the surface. It sits there cause the freezing level is static.

Part of the higher intensity reflectivity is probably because of the strength of the southerly LLJ. This is enhanced by the geography of the Champlain Valley, which is completely exposed to the south but surrounded by mountains on both its western and eastern flank. Therefore, you have more forcing from that channeling effect in the Champlain Valley, intensifying precipitation.

I remember this in the 2/24/10 snowstorm when I was a student at Middlebury College...we had southerly flow which led to localized areas of heavy wet snow in the Champlain Valley. We received 20" in that storm. The effect was also evident in the freak 1/3/10 storm that dropped 35" at BTV and again 20" at Middlebury just to the south. There were a lot of other factors at play in the latter storm, however.

First of all how often does a wind advisory happen over the interior and not the coast in these setups....second of all, another contradiction again with criteria.

...WIND ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 7 AM THIS MORNING TO 7 PM ESTTHIS EVENING...THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN TAUNTON HAS ISSUED A WINDADVISORY...WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 7 AM THIS MORNING TO 7 PM ESTTHIS EVENING.* LOCATION...WESTERN AND CENTRAL MASSACHUSETTS FROM THE EAST SLOPES OF THE BERKSHIRES THROUGH WORCESTER COUNTY. AS WELL AS HILLSBOROUGH AND CHESHIRE COUNTIES IN NEW HAMPSHIRE.* WINDS...WEST 20 TO 30 MPH WITH GUSTS UP TO 45 MPH.* TIMING...THROUGH EARLY THIS EVENING.* IMPACTS...WESTERLY WIND GUSTS MAY DOWN TREE LIMBS AND SMALL TREES. ISOLATED POWER OUTAGES ARE POSSIBLE.PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...A WIND ADVISORY IS ISSUED WHEN SUSTAINED WINDS ARE FORECAST TO BE31 TO 39 MPH OR GUSTS WILL RANGE BETWEEN 46 AND 57 MPH. WINDSTHIS STRONG ARE CAPABLE OF DOWNING SMALL TREE LIMBS ANDBRANCHES...POSSIBLY CAUSING ISOLATED POWER OUTAGES. DRIVING CANALSO BE DIFFICULT...ESPECIALLY FOR HIGH PROFILE VEHICLES.&&

It's been gusting over 40 here since 5:00 AM..You either issue one for everyone or yo don't issue any in a setup like today.

They were salting the roads in NH with temps in the low 40s. Gotta get that salt on the roads when the temps are 10F above freezing and roads blown dry.

It seems like everyone's gone soft this year, roads were closed during a run in the mill snowstorm and many schools were closed during the last cold snap, roads are salted daily and I actually heard someone say that global warming forced the Polar Vortex away from it's usual nesting grounds, the north pole :)
