Interestingly, I noticed in the past when it rains, the first snow to go is snow on the trees.  Outside my office, the snow is still stuck on the trees - and it's pouring.

Cold trees!

Everything absorbed the cold, it has to catch up with the warming taking place.

Sideroads are horrible around here....all sheets of ice with slush and puddles on top of them...I had no idea how much ice there was when I was looking out the window.  Driving was bad...and walking was nearly impossible...ground toooo cold...air temp ain't doing a thing for the pavement that has been glaciated for the last week...what a mess

Drove 88 from moline, did not realize there was ice until I tried to turn into my subdivision and power slid into a snowdrift

Yea, side roads here have a layer of ice/slush on them.

Most roads have some flooding too, with nowhere for the water to go.

My cousin called and told me she left a casino in East Chicago and went south on Cline Avenue in a sea of stopped tail lights.  Snow that had been piled on to the side was melting in the rain and flooding the road with huge pot holes opening up everywhere that would swallow your tire. Could only drive ten mph to reach the Borman Expressway.

One buddy sprained his ankle while carrying his daughter across an icy parking lot (Woodridge)...my mom (Darien) couldn't make it up her driveway after she went to visit my father....I watched (about 15 minutes ago) a car slide right into the middle of our neighbor's front lawn while standing in front of my house talking to my mom...Needless to say my sideroads and driveway are still sheets of ice....Main roads (locally) seemed to be fine with the exception being monster ponding here and there...

Buckling looks pretty bad too around here....something for the street department to sort out in the spring...

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE CHICAGO/ROMEOVILLE IL

628 PM CST FRI JAN 10 2014

DISCUSSION

624 PM CST

WE DECIDED TO ISSUE A FREEZING RAIN ADVISORY THROUGH THIS EVENING.

ALTHOUGH AIR TEMPERATURES CONTINUE TO WARM TO NEAR 40...THE COLD

GROUND IS ALLOWING AREA ROADS TO BECOME ICY. WE RECEIVED NUMEROUS

REPORTS OF ACCIDENTS AND EVEN CLOSED HIGHWAYS ACROSS NORTH CENTRAL

ILLINOIS. THE ILLINOIS STATE POLICE IS URGING DRIVERS TO STAY HOME

THIS EVENING ACROSS NORTH CENTRAL ILLINOIS. GIVEN HOW BAD

CONDITIONS APPEAR TO BE...WE HAVE OPTED TO GO WITH A FREEZING RAIN

ADVISORY IN SPITE OF CONTINUED WARMING. WITH TIME THE ROAD TEMPS

SHOULD WARM AND END THE THREAT FOR ICING.
