birdsofprey02
Anne Arundel County students/parents are furious they didn't get a delay... Accidents everywhere heading to the schools, cars running off the road. My colleague's daughter sent him a pic from her classroom... no teacher showed up, she was stuck in traffic. The superintendent put up a lame response on their website about not being able to make the decision in time... Seems like all other counties delayed openings or closed in time. Hell, even AACC delayed this morning, which really seems odd when county schools go in on time but the community college doesn't. Its usually the other way around. Scuddz
i was kind enough to put salt down when i saw how icy it was, so the hubby could safely make it to the car without falling (and myself when I left with the kiddo)

ThePhotoGuy
Almost fell on my face trying to get pictures of the ice on the trees. It looked like the sidewalk was just wet but no it was a sheet of ice! For once, I agree with parents complaining that school is not closed or delayed

ThePhotoGuy
Looks like aa county will be closing the next time 850's drop below freezing just to be safe Most likely! For once ice over performed here! Per the Police PIO, there were 70+ accidents (reported, likely more) this morning in Anne Arundel.
NCWX
Our county closed schools. (Page) With good reason. We have 1/8 to 1/4 inch of ice. I drove carefully up our mtn and turned around after 100 feet. Pure ice. Temp is 31 here.

The superintendent put up a lame response on their website about not being able to make the decision in time... Seems like all other counties delayed openings or closed in time. Received a text from AA County regarding their decision this morning. It went something along the lines of "we had received reports that road conditions were fine at 3-4 am, at the time when we need to deploy our buses, etc." Well shoot Anne Arundel County, sometimes you're just going to have to go with the forecast that CALLS for precipitation at the height of the morning bus commute, with ROAD TEMPERATURES below freezing (and in some areas, well below freezing). There was a freezing rain advisory out, after all. In terms of the warning/advisory definition, there is no differentiation in terms of *where* the ice accretion is occurring when it comes to freezing rain advisories (< .25") or ice storm warning (.25+") -- it can be elevated (non-paved surfaces) or both elevated and paved surfaces. 99.1% of freezing rain events in the DC metro area with temps 30-32 are not going to be a big deal because the ground is generally warm (road temps above 32F). Thus just the light glaze on your trees, power lines, all elevated surfaces. HOWEVER, when you come out of such an arctic blast that we have, which included 3+ days of temperatures below freezing (many hours over 20 degrees below freezing) -- then you get that problem with some ice build up on the roadways. In fact, in situations like these, icy spots can still be a lingering problem at 33-34F because it was so cold. This was a case when a freezing rain advisory was true to it's definition -- and it happened to work out that way on the roadways. As we know, not all "freezing rain advisories" are created equal. As we know, not all "freezing rain advisories" are created equal. Absolutely. The precedent road temps have made this a very different event than most. The secondary roads in Clarksburg look exactly the same as when a marginal snow rolls thru. Traffic has merely mushed the ice up into slush, even in places where brine was spread. Lightly travelled roads are still very icy. Temp in Clarksburg is 31.1F as the ZR is coming to an end. There is easily 0.1" accretion on all surfaces from the 0.17" ZR and there was 0.1" SN/IP from onset.

ThePhotoGuy
Still freezing rain on elevated surfaces. The ice is getting "thicker" on the power lines.
wxdude64
From looking at rain gauge and having 0.33 at 7 am this morning, I'd say getting close to 0.50 inch of rain here....sorta glad we 'marginalized' on temps hanging right at or slightly above freezing. I'd not want 1/2 inch of ice! Up to 34.2 here, raining still.

bobk
Here is the AACPS statement claiming that there was a "change in the weather pattern" . Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS) NOTICE TO PARENTS AND EMPLOYEES: This morning’s change in the weather pattern put our school system in a difficult predicament with regard to school operations. As we were deliberating this decision between 3 and 4 a.m. today, we received no reports of problems on the roadways. Our discussions with county and state agencies gave us information that road conditions were fine. At that time, incidentally, most other school systems around us were also planning an on-time arrival for students and staff. The change in weather between 5 and 6 a.m. put us in a difficult position. The complexity of our bus transportation and operational system prevent a change in school operation plans at that point. They also prevent AACPS from having one set of students (high school students, for example), go to school on time and others delayed by two hours. We made, as we do every day, the most reasonable and prudent decision we could make based on the information we had at the time. With regard to schools today, students whose parents opt to keep them home or send them in late will be held harmless. Students who do not go to school will be counted as absent, but the absence will be excused and those students will be allowed to make up work. Parents should make the decisions they feel are best for their children without worry that children will be penalized for missing school. Employees who have difficulty traveling to their work location should contact their supervisor to make arrangements for the work day. Supervisors have been instructed to accommodate those employees who encounter such difficulty.
Mrs.J
The AA schools' facebook page is not pretty. Probably similar to FCPS's on Tuesday. Amazing how nasty people can be sitting behind a screen. Of course we still have parents bitchin' up here because we did not close today, just a 2 hr. delay. What ever happened to parents making the decision for their own children. Any absence due to weather when the school system is open is an excused absence up here.
