Some pretty impressive drifting this morning for only 3 inches of snow. Glad to see Wes just about jackpottted. And of course DCA has to keep the streak alive. They reported 1.9 inches just to screw with us i believe.

they did that just to keep their name in the news...and CWG will feed off this and make it even more annoying

I saved the full animated gif but the file size is too big to post. Link is time sensitive but pretty cool watching the progression of the storm.

So the ever-insistent RAP was actually right about the last gasp bands between midnight and 4 am. The placement was pretty spot on too, with the consolidation of the stuff coming out of the WV panhandle with the PA bands after midnight.

I was nicely enjoying my 6 inches at Chestnut Ridge in northern Baltimore County and at 1:30 the pager alerts for a full firebox house fire in our first due (being a volunteer among the many hats I wear). Fun drive to the station on the unplowed streets with the added bonus of green radar bands. Luckily it was a small electrical fire and we were not out for 4 hours tanking water and fighting fire. But it did get me out into the elements to experience some good storm!

Sent from my SM-N900V

Water shuttle operations are abhorrent sub 20 degrees.  Everything freezes up and you practically have to salt the earth.

Nice to watch the stuff drop down from PA as if it was magic.

One of my favs from last night.. got some good ones -- though even in two hours it's hard to get a ton with a tripod in tow etc. this is down the hill a bit from me, they had a bit less snow.

I'd be highly suspicious of this if it weren't for the Deale and Birdsville numbers. Compaction wins this round, I suppose.

Very nice pic!  I always like how snow collects on stuff like that (before the wind).  I got 4" in Silver Spring.  Will post some pictures later when I get a chance.

That's quite a lot of work toting a tripod around like that, but not much choice with longer shutter speeds.  I should have taken mine out but opted not to and went hand-held.  Used my 50mm 1.4 lens at first, but near wide open the depth of field gets tricky and in difficult conditions like that you get camera shake anyhow sometimes (it's far better for indoor lighting & portraits I think).  Resorted to being "lazy" and using image stabilized standard kit lens in the end (which did a pretty good job)!

BWI up to 4.2" storm total.  That sounds more representative of the area.  Still can't believe (well, yes I can since it's DCA) that DCA didn't get any measurable snow after midnight.  NWS employee reported 6.5" in Columbia!  I think I'm going to go with an even 6" for MBY.

yeah, i had a lot of compaction for sure. I noticed my measurements suddenly stopped increasing quickly. I sent LWX that I measured multiple spots between 6-8, with 7" being the average. Let them decide what to officially put.

There is an official observer in Parkton who got 5.9"...you might have gotten more where you live

DCA definitely got measurable after midnight. Those bands were low ratio fluff and dca got at least 2 of them. Obs guy was must have been napping.

2 closest reports to me are 4.9 and 4.2. I'm in ne rockville close to norbeck. Norbeck spotter went 4.9. I think I'll go 4.5 and call it a day. I conservatively went 4.25 last night but what the heck. Another .25 can't be questioned so I'm scoring it.

Obviously, not everyone has the same budget, but slik makes some fairly light weight, easy to tote tripods that do not cost an arm and a leg. Certainly won't cost you anything like a nice really right stuff tripod.

Awesome picture, Ian.  I'd enjoy seeing them all.  And I've yet to find an affordable tripod that's easy to tote.

Ha!  That's what I use.A Slik u5550.  I didn't really shop for it, but just picked it up in a national park visitor center because my old cheap one broke and I needed something immediately.  Pretty light and fine for what I use it for.

How much did you get?. I measured every 15 minutes since the start of the storm until it was over and i got 7.3" but i seem to be higher than everyone else. I know i did not measure wrong as i measure in 6 spots every time.
