tamarack
It is sort of statistically weird to have the 2 coldest temps ever in 1 winter but 2 months apart. Also odd that the two greatest Dec cold waves bottomed out on the 30th. It looks like a worse version of the 1980 Xmas cold outbreak...cheap midnight high on the 29th to prevent BOS from having its only below 0F high on record. It was surprising that BOS got a bit milder on 12/30/1917 than NYC's max of 2. The 1917-18 cold wave lasted a week, and is easily NYC's coldest 7-day period. Also, Farmington COOP's coldest daily mean was 12/30/17, with -11/-36/-23.5, which was -41 compared to their (then) averages.
dendrite
Was looking at more hourlies across New England for Feb 1943... On 2/15 ACK had an afternoon high (hourly ob) of 2F off of a min of -5F. Their 5Z temp the night before was 13F so that afternoon temp gets forgotten. Other afternoon highs that day and then the coldest temp during that outbreak...
