HoarfrostHubb
I just remember frequently in the late 50s and early 60s with Louisville and Cincinnati bitter cold and snowy. I remember watching a bengals playoff game on tv from Los Angeles about 30 years ago with temps in the low single numbers.day game.1982. http://youtu.be/W12Qywn3AeQ
powderfreak
When your highs are below zero...you laugh. KY and TN will see highs below zero?! holy crap. Our two days of high/low during this snap was 0/-8 and -5/-24. Today was 22/-24. A 46 degree rise since midnight.
Chicago WX
nice, they are not ready for it. Max posted pics from Indiana of completely wiped out grocery shelves. People are ready in my corner of Indiana. But yeah, lol, grocery store essentials kinda wiped out right now. At least they still had beer when I went tonight. Snowstorm coming beforehand to up the ante a little. Should be a good time.
powderfreak
Yeah it's insane. I just hate the lame midnight highs. Near 20F at 6Z with a below 0F afternoon. On the flip side, we lucked out last night here with low temps... hit -24F just prior to midnight and got credit for it yesterday and today. Looking back on this, it'll look like two brutal nights instead of really just one truly cold night. The -8F the night before was just sort of run of the mill cold. weathafella
-13º would break the all time low max record for Chicago. -11º is it right now, set back on Dec 24, 1983 and Jan 18, 1994. But ORD will get midnight-high'ed most likely. LOT has -4º for them at midnight. I miss posters such as yourself. Regional forums meant missing the insight of a lot of good posters. snowman21
Kentucky and Tennessee are laughing at are cold spell. Temps there are real deal this week. Wish we'd get the "real deal." I wasn't impressed with this week's cold. Just once I'd like to see the cold unload directly on the northeast rather than the circuitous route it normally takes to get here. It's really tough to get true bitter air in SNE because of the mountains to our west and northwest. Our best delivery is usually on NNW-N flow especially here near BOS because we tend to lack downsloping and can tuck some of that cold from NH and Maine down our way similar to the other day. W-NW flows are dry adiabatic downslope dandies usually.
Baroclinic Zone
I know KTAN can be a warm spot...but they seem to run a bit warm. Time and time again they are warmer than anyone to the north, west, south, east..you name it. I've been following it and it certainly stands out on sunny days. Something seems a bit fishy there. downslope dandy spot.

Yeah, I'm kind of bitter that places (a lot) further south get much colder weather than SNE. Just look at the -30s in Okla-freakin-homa a couple years back. That one bothers me the most for some reason. Maybe because I'm lucky to see a night in the single digits during the dead of the SNE "brutal" winter. snowman21
Do either of you have obs from the late Dec 1933 cold shot? I don't off hand, but isn't the ISH/3505 stuff all free now? I thought NCDC had opened up the entire archive of surface obs going back over 100 years to anyone with an FTP client.

Usually I just use WU for quick and dirty archived obs, but they only have a few stations with data before 1948.
dendrite
how was it compared to Feb 1934? CON had a max/min of -11/-21 on 12/29/33 for their coldest low max on record. I think their next coldest low max is -4 or something close to that. ORH and BOS both hit -17 in that cold shot, but I think they were screwed by midnight highs.
