Read them off wrong, still -32 though at Falls Village. Coincidentally the same day PWM hit their all time low temp of -39 (2/16/43).

I just cannot imagine it ever getting that cold here. Seems like we struggle mightily to get to -10 even under presumably ideal conditions. That must've been a heck of an airmass.

Keep in mind at the time the area around the observing site was much less developed. A lot easier to radiate without all the buildings and blacktop.

All time record lows for any date or just Jan 3/4?

I doubt I even hit my personal low of -18.9F from 2004

I could go to -13

Much easier to break a daily record. Our regional all-time temps are pretty tough to beat. Impressive that northern ME today came within 3 degrees.

Well golly gee, this list my town as having the record low temperature:

http://coolweather.net/statetemperature/connecticut_temperature.htm

I've never heard of that but it's also only a tie of the Falls Village record of -32°F.  Good to know though!

In case anyone is interested in seeing the wx record, it can be seen here:

I thought Ct was -26 at Falls Village?

-26°F is the record at BDL.  The acknowledged record low for CT is -32° at Falls Village and Coventry.

I think you'll do alright, you live in the coldest part of Mass.!  Birch Hill Dam held the states lowest temp until the 1980s (I still question the Chester numbers) at -35°F.

I would agree that I don't think we'll see all time records broken but I do think we'll see some impressive numbers.

My all time record low since 1985 is -20°.  My record low for Saturday morning is actually only zero so that will surely go.

Is that Big Black River site relatively new? Seems hard to believe it hadn't hit -50 until 2009.

The difference in MAV and MET guidance is pretty massive.

For ORH, MAV has a high of 5F tomorrow with a low of -7F Friday night...MET is a high of 16F with a low of 0F Friday night.

ORE looks like a prime spot for the ASOS winner in SNE tomorrow night. AFN may give it a run, but my first guess would be ORE. Could get close to -20F there.

It's a tie, but it still counts IMO. I wonder where this reading was taken.

GFS MOS spitting out -20 at IJD on Saturday morning.

Wonder if all time state records might be challenged in some places?

-32 is the record in Coventry from Jan 1961. That's a tie with Falls Village from 1943. Some of the other numbers from 1/22/61 are also very impressive...

-28 Bulls Bridge

-27 Washington

-27 Mansfield

-26 Bradley

MET so far today is not capturing the cold temps.

I knew it was too warm, but I'm wondering if MAV is too cold for tomorrow. I guess we'll find out soon enough. The airmass is more impressive down below 850mb than is typical.

My apologies to Coventry. I wonder where that was recorded. Coventry overall is pretty hilly town and you wouldn't think an all time state record would come from there. It must have been in a real low spot near that river

Given the number of -25 to -30F reports from 1/22/1961 I'm not surprised someone was able to sneak down to -32... especially in a town that's hilly. Where there's hills there's valleys.

Here are the 10 coldest mornings in Coventry - at 480 ft.

1 -32.0 1961-01-22 2 -28.0 1961-01-23 3 -27.0 1984-01-23 - -27.0 1984-01-22 - -27.0 1982-01-18 - -27.0 1965-02-04 - -27.0 1961-01-28 8 -24.0 1967-03-19 - -24.0 1967-02-13 10 -22.0 1988-01-15

I always thought Greene RI had the record. I had posted about Wood River Junction RI, only about 7 miles from the ocean. I used to live about 3/4 mile from the obs site, bottom of a sand hill and pine trees, absolute beast of a radiant site. http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/extremes/scec/records

Our town varies in elevation from 934' down to around 200'. Perhaps this reading was from close to the Mansfield line as that is in a valley of sorts.
