svh19044
Anyone know why Mt. Holly's FA is still under a WSW? I don't know if it has anything to do with it, but the roads still suck. I am guessing that it is because of the "drifting" snow.
JERSEYSNOWROB
I think I said this elsewhere, but it occurs to me that most of you don't really know what "fluff" snow is. You guys get it SO rarely. In fact, snow that's so cold that its "dry" is not all that common, so you probably are equating "dry" snow with "fluffy" snow. Which isn't the case at all, as we've just seen. Yeah as you know we typically get that heavy wet snowfall here. Nothing even close to what you see out west. So you are correct. Is fluff snow the kind with huge dendrites then? If so we got double snowball-sized agglomerations of huge flakes in ? early March 2007? in Middletown DE once. penndotguy
Anyone know why Mt. Holly's FA is still under a WSW? I think I read in the AFD this morning they were going to keep it up till 1pm when it expires due to the blowing and drifting snow and low wind chills

NJwinter23
My dad down in Holmdel measured around the house anywhere between 8-12" depending on the drifting...an average of 10" seems to line up very well with all of the reports here...I know thats not a very official way of going about measuring, but I'm not there to do it so I get the best I can out of paps lol

Winter Wizard
I've measured between 5 and 7 inches at various points around my house, so I'll go with 6" as my final total. It's a winter wonderland outside! With that, I have my second 6"+ storm of the season, and have 18.5" in total, which is almost my seasonal average. Great storm, and awesome start to the winter. JSchwake28
Airport reporters (which are not always at the airport) report 6-hour measurements. The way its supposed to work is that a snow board is set on top of the snow, snow accumulates on the board, at the end of the 6 hours (or sooner if the snow stops), the depth is measured, the board is cleared and placed back on top of the fresh snow for the next 6 hours, cycle then repeated. Its always hard to know exactly how an observer measures; the 6-hour method *should* (in my opinion) work well, *but* there are plenty of ways it can be messed up. If the snow board placed in a location where it drifts too much, or is placed lower than the surrounding snow, or is subject to excessive roof blow-off. This isn't a big problem usually (for inflation) at airports themselves, but there's the second catch: Mt. Holly's airport snow observers are all removed from the airports they serve, because most don't have on-site observers anymore. PHL does, but the FAA would rather not measure and so the PHL airport observer is actually located in National Park NJ. Anyway, as I was saying, the 6-hour method tends to run into more problems in an environment with a high concentration of structures and trees, like your typical private, off-airport observer's property. Now I say that it *should* work well because I have my parents using same method, and their numbers always seem to jive well with surrounding reports (which presumeably aren't using the 6-hour method). But I strictly regulate their practices. Thanks a lot Ray!

Chief83
I think it is interesting - even at 15 degrees - how the early January sun (as compared to March) melts the snow off the roads once the plows have taken to down to a thin layer. Especially on black macadam. (Not sure what tonight will be in regard to ice on the roads once the sun goes down)
Absolute Humidity
So for those who were interested in how ratios really panned out... I have my folks measure midnight-midnight for CoCoRaHS (rare but not unheard of) and this is what they got: 1/2 - 0.43" liquid out of 4.4" snow, a 10:1 ratio 1/3 - 0.22" liquid out of 3.3" snow, a 15:1 ratio Overall for the storm, 0.65" liquid for 7.7" of snow, about a 12:1 ratio Yeah, I had .88 Liquid to 11" snow; about 12 to 1ish.
ChescoWx
My 8.0" of snow melted down to 0.58" of liquid so 14:1 ratio for the storm average - obviously much greater with the back end of the storm Yeah, I had .88 Liquid to 11" snow; about 12 to 1ish. famartin
For what its worth, the observer did report a depth of 9" yesterday morning, matching the storm total, so maybe there was just a bit more there. There were a few events in previous years where there were large discrepancies between total fall and max depth.
